Augusta on the Kennebec River

Augusta the capital of Maine is the ninth-largest city in the state. It stretches along the Kennebec River. Among the highlights in the city are the historic Blaine House which is the official residence of the Governor of Maine, the Lithgow Public Library, the Maine State Museum, the Capitol Building, and the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine located at the University of Maine at Augusta.

Maine State Museum opened in 1971. It was the seventh opening after its previous history of six closures, after its first opening in 1836 when the main displays were geological and biological exhibits. State funding guarantees it will not close again. The rich variety of exhibits include a fully-working mill, a locomotive, reproductions of former stores, a blacksmith’s shop, and a sewing room. The struggles between Native Indians, the French, and the British are well-represented, while the original scientific exhibits from 1836 are among the items still on display. It is a great place to learn more about Augusta and Maine.

Samantha Smith was a schoolgirl from Manchester, Maine who became famous as a peace activist. She wrote letters to the President of the USSR during the Cold War pleading for better relations and peace between the USSR and the USA. She died in a plane accident with her father at the age of 13 in 1985 just before beginning a contract as an actress. The statue and plaque that remembers her can be found outside the State Museum.

Old Fort Western is a living history museum. It was built in 1754 and Old Fort Western is considered to be the oldest wooden garrison dating back to the French & Indian War. There is a museum where you can learn about the site's history. The central building was restored in the early 20th century and the former stockade fence was recreated.

Viles Arboretum is a wonderful place to walk through gardens and forests. There are many trails you can follow and see the 300 different species of trees, plants, and shrubs. Here you'll find some six miles of different routes to take. It is a good place for birdwatchers. Both bikes and horses are allowed.

The Blaine House is the official home of the Governor of Maine. It is located adjacent to the Capitol Building. Today it is both the governor's residence and a public building. Tours are given of the interior.

The Governor Hill Mansion is an event facility. It was built in 1902 and was the home of the State Governor. It has been beautifully preserved and tours are available.

Maine State Capitol Building is located at the top of Weston's Hill and overlooks Capitol Park. The building was completed in 1832 and is surrounded by beautifully manicured grounds. It was built with Maine granite and designed to resemble the Massachusetts State Capitol Building. Free guided tours are given.

Capitol Park is nearly 200 years old. It is located near the Kennebec River. There are gravel paths to walk. It has become a place for gatherings and public speaking. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Within the park you'll find the Vietnam Memorial.

Augusta Civic Center has 26 rooms along with two ballrooms for various functions. The building hosts exhibitions, sporting and corporate events and is a regular basketball venue. Concerts have been given here with performers like Bruce Springsteen.

Brook Bond Recreation Area offers recreation with walking, biking, and Nordic skiing in the winter months. There are almost 20 designated trails. Dogs on leashes are welcome.

Kennebec River Rail Trail is a 6.5-mile trail stretching from Augusta south to Gardiner. It is a route for walkers, bikers, runners, and skateboarders. The trail runs alongside an old railroad line and the Kennebec River. Along the way, you can relax on benches and enjoy the views.

The Old Post Office and Court House in downtown Augusta is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in the late 1880s in the Romanesque Revivial style. There are two lateral towers.
