Sightseeing in the Caribbean country

By Rasma RaistersPublished about a year ago 4 min read

Grenada is a Caribbean country that consists of a main island and smaller surrounding islands. It is referred to as the Spice Island. St. George’s is the capital of Grenada.

The Underwater Sculpture Park, situated in Moliniere Bay just north of St. George's, is an underwater art gallery conceptualized by British artist Jason de Caires Taylor. The park features a total of 80 art pieces, including life-size sculptures such as a circle of women holding hands and a man seated at a desk. Visitors, whether they are divers, snorkelers, or passengers on glass-bottomed boats, can appreciate the exhibitions on display.

Fort Frederick was built by the French in 1779. It’s the island’s best-preserved fort and offers visitors great views from Richmond Hill.

The Carenage is a scenic inlet. It is a wonderful place to take a walk along the edge of the water and see the colorful fishing boats. At the north end, you’ll find Georgian buildings overlooking the water. You can browse the shops or relax at one of the restaurants.

Keep an eye out for the bronze statue Christ of the Deep which was a gift from the owners of a luxury liner in gratitude for the local rescue efforts after their ship exploded.

Fort George, established by the French in 1705, stands as Grenada's oldest fort and serves as the centerpiece of the skyline. Visitors have the opportunity to climb to the top for breathtaking views. Additionally, outside of the main fort area, there are a series of dark defensive tunnels waiting to be explored. Notably, a plaque in the parade ground commemorates the place where revolutionary leader Maurice Bishop was executed, an event that ultimately led to the U.S. invasion in 1983.

St. George’s Anglican Church was built in 1835 and is topped by a four-sided clock tower. It serves as the town’s timepiece. The church has a wooden ceiling and a gallery.

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception sits on top of a hill and offers great views over the town.

Grenada National Museum is dedicated to displaying the history of the original indigenous inhabitants of the island, the colonial period, and slavery. On some Friday evenings, there are drumming performances and folk dancing.

The historic Sendall Tunnel is a narrow 340-ft. passageway built in 1894. It leads through a hill to Bruce Street and the rest of St. George’s. Originally it was built for horse-drawn carriages but today both pedestrians and cars make use of it.

St. George’s Market Square is the busiest on Friday and Saturday mornings. It’s the largest market in the town. The stalls are full of fresh island produce and it is a colorful sight.

Taking a Look at Grenada

The River Antoine Rum Distillery stands as the oldest continuously operating rum distillery in the entire Caribbean area. Situated amidst the fields of Saint Patrick to the north, the original distillery structures trace back to the 18th century. Visitors can witness authentic history here, such as the antique machinery employed to crush and process the sugarcane, the creaking water wheel powered by the River Antoine, and the wooden conveyor belts. Guided tours are offered on a regular basis.

Grand Anse Beach is located at the extreme southwestern edge of Grenada. It offers talcum powder sands and a lovely backdrop of hills with palms and dunes. The water is turquoise and you can see the occasional dolphin taking a jump. The hotels and bars offer cool, refreshing drinks.

Visitors also enjoy doing some shopping at the Grand Anse Craft and Spice Market.

Grand Etang National Park is located in the center of Grenada. Within the park, visitors can explore miniature forests, blooming ferns, orchids with waxy petals, palm tree groves, and ancient trees. The towering peaks of the central highlands add to the park's appeal as a haven for hikers. Numerous trails wind through the park, offering stunning views from Mount Qua Qua's summit, a leisurely stroll along the banks of Grand Etang Lake, and a journey through volcanic valleys where hummingbirds can be spotted.

Additionally, visitors can enjoy swimming in the cascades and pools, including the Seven Sisters Falls.

The Royal Mount Carmel Waterfalls come crashing down over a bulbous cliff of carved and moss-speckled rock in the middle of the rainforests. They rise 21 meters high and are the tallest on the Spice Island.

The Levera National Park offers sights of the cone-shaped green tops of the Sandy Islands and Sugarloaf Isles.

Located in the northern reaches of Grenada. You can see waterfowl and snipes, sandpipers and herons.

The Belmont Estate, established in the 17th century, is a plantation that offers tours showcasing its organic farm featuring tropical fruit and spices. Guests have the opportunity to discover the process of cocoa cultivation and the art of combining the fruit with chocolate. For chocolate enthusiasts, there is a specialized tour that includes a three-course lunch with chocolate incorporated into each course. Additionally, visitors can indulge in dining at the estate's restaurant, explore the heritage museum, and shop for chocolate treats and local crafts.

Children can also delight in interacting with the goats, donkeys, tortoises, and talking parrots.

The Dougaldston Spice Estate is one of the best places to take a look at spice cultivation. There are regular guided tours and visitors can purchase local spices.

La Sagesse on the Atlantic side of the island lies on the former estate of Lord Brownlow, cousin to Queen Elizabeth. This beachside residence is now a romantic hotel and restaurant by a golden sand beach.

The protected bay is great for swimming. There are lovely nature trails to explore. Many avian species make their home in the scrub forests, mangroves, and salt ponds.
