What is Adi Kailash?

Also known as Chota Kailash, Shiva Kailash, or Jonglingkong Peak, Adi Kailash is located in the Himalayan mountain range of Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand.
• It is one of the sacred Panch Kailash (Five Kailashas).
• Stands tall at an elevation of 19,505 ft (5945 m).
• Resembles the mirror image of Mount Kailash in Tibet.

During my visit, I remember waking up early and watching the first rays of sun touch the snow-capped peaks. That moment felt like time stood still, and I could truly sense the spiritual energy of the place.
In Hindu mythology, it is believed that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati spent time here, making this sacred mountain a symbol of their divine love and union. Many pilgrims also believe Adi Kailash to be the spiritual abode of Lord Shiva himself.

Why is Adi Kailash Famous?

  • Considered as a reflection of Mount Kailash.
  • A sacred pilgrimage site in Hinduism.
  • Legends say Lord Shiva meditated here.
  • Mythical stories narrate that Pandavas, Kunti, and Parvati are spiritually connected with this region.

During my trek, I felt an unusual peace and calmness walking along the paths surrounded by mountains. It’s not just the views — it’s the feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself.

How to Reach Adi Kailash? (Detailed Travel Plan)

  1. Reaching Pithoragarh
  • By Train: Reach Kathgodam railway station.
  • By Air: Nearest airport is Pithoragarh Airport.
  • By Road: From Kathgodam, hire a taxi or take a bus from Haldwani bus stand (6 km from Kathgodam).
  • Direct buses are also available from Dehradun or Delhi to Pithoragarh.

2. Pithoragarh to Dharchula (92 km)

  • Dharchula is a beautiful town at 940 m altitude.
  • Direct taxis are available from Pithoragarh.
  • The road journey offers serene landscapes and Himalayan beauty.

I remember stopping midway to take pictures — the valleys and rivers there are breathtaking.

3. Dharchula to Gunji/Nabi (3200 m)

  • Gunji is a small village near the India-Tibet border, serving as the base camp for Adi Kailash.
  • Important: Permits are required from Dharchula.
  • After this point, mobile networks usually stop working.
  • Staying overnight at Gunji gave me a chance to interact with locals and learn about their simple mountain life — an unforgettable experience.

4. Gunji to Jyolingkong (Adi Kailash Darshan)

  • Local jeeps take you from Gunji to Jyolingkong.
  • On the way, you will witness Kunti Parvat, Pandav Fort, Brahma Parvati, Pandav Parvat, and Parvati Mukut.
  • From Jyolingkong, a short 3–4 km trek leads you to the sacred Parvati Lake (Gauri Kund) where devotees take a holy dip.

I took a dip in the lake, and the cold water felt like a spiritual cleanse, a moment I’ll never forget.

5. Om Parvat Route (Gunji – Kalapani – Navidhang – Nabi)

  • Near Adi Kailash lies the mystical Om Parvat.
  • The melting snow naturally forms the shape of (OM) on the mountain.
  • Witnessing it live was surreal — the mountain itself seemed to speak divinity.
