The Tower of London

By Tabby LondonPublished 9 months ago 2 min read

I was lucky enough to pop over to the Tower of London for lunch. Yes, lunch was so nice to have the privilege of doing so. I was invited, and my host has a membership in the Palaces. For more information, check out https://www.hrp.org.uk/membership/#gs.lybhqg

I’m tempted to get a membership because I like popping into the Tower of London. It’s like stepping back in time and discovering something new every time. It wasn’t as crowded as expected, but many groups were visiting.

Here are some interesting facts about the Tower of London

✳️ It was founded in 1078. Construction began under William the Conqueror as a symbol of Norman power.

✳️It was once a Royal Fortress. Initially a royal palace and fortress, it housed monarchs, including Henry VIII.

✳️ It served as a Prison and Execution Site. It’s been Infamous for imprisoning figures like Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth I; executions often took place on Tower Green or nearby Tower Hill.

✳️It still houses the Crown Jewel. Since the 14th century, the Crown Jewels, including the Imperial State Crown, have been displayed in the Jewel House.

✳️The White Tower. The central keep, built around 1078–1100, is the oldest part and a prime example of Norman architecture.

✳️Ravens Legend. Tradition states that at least six ravens must reside at the Tower, or the kingdom will fall; the Ravenmaster tends them.

✳️Medieval Menagerie. From the 13th century, it hosted a royal zoo with exotic animals like lions, elephants, and polar bears. It was the predecessor to the London Zoo.

✳️Yeoman Warders. Protected by ceremonial Beefeaters (Yeoman Warders) since Tudor times, who also act as tour guides.

✳️Traitors’ Gate. A water gate was used to bring high-profile prisoners, such as Anne Boleyn, into the Tower by boat.

✳️UNESCO Site. Designated a World Heritage Site for its historical and architectural importance.

Parting Comments

Time flew too quickly. I stopped and paused to look at the new poppy installation that is currently underway. The poppies will be on display from May through to November. I’m hoping to go down again to see the finished work.

The London I've been discovering is usually off the well-beaten track.I love the nooks and crannies and walking along the streets steeped in centuries worth of history. I'm fond of Zone 1 because that's where it all began centuries ago.
