7 Ways to Combat Homesickness While Living Abroad

Anywhere can be home if you try!

By Jennifer ChildersPublished 6 years ago 3 min read

Whether you are going abroad to study, work, or settle down permanently, things are going to be...different from what you are used to. It doesn't matter where you originate from, or how open-minded you may be, there's going to be plenty of times you will be homesick, and there will be plenty of things about the new culture that you think you will never understand. I found all of this out the hard way when I lived in the UK for a semester abroad. I had dreamed of visiting England for years. Don't get me wrong, it was a wonderful experience and I would love to go back someday. But...there were so many things missing from home that I had taken for granted, and missed.

Feeling homesick is okay! It's normal. You're not less of an adventurer for missing pieces of home that you left behind. But that said, feeling homesick still isn't fun. So here are some ways to help remedy that!

1. Keep in contact with friends and family...

Thankfully, with social media, keeping in contact with people across the globe is easier than ever! Don't want to run up phone bills with long distance calls? FaceTime to the rescue! Want to share photos from your weekend trip with friends? Instagram can help! Yes, the time differences make it a little trickier, but it is manageable.

2. ...But don't overdo it!

If you spend every waking moment abroad trying to talk to loved ones from back home, you'll also miss out on opportunities for meeting new people and having new adventures! Where's the fun in travelling if you're not going to experience new things? Try to limit your talk time with family and friends to just a few times a week, if possible.

3. Pack things with you that you know will make you feel at home

This one is a no-brainer, but it bears repeating. After all, you may leave them at home just to avoid using up space in your suitcase that could be used for other things. But don't do this. Try to bring a piece of home with you wherever you go. Whether it's a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, a family photo--Anything that will make you feel like you are at home in your new surroundings, is extremely vital!

4. If they are willing, ask your friends or family to send you some treats from home that you miss!

When I lived in the UK, I really, really, REALLY missed American peanut butter. (And yes, American and British peanut butter taste radically different!) My mom, being the saint that she is, sent me small packets of Jif peanut butter, and I was ecstatic!

If you have a favorite snack or treat that isn't available in your new country, see if someone from back home would be willing to send you a ration or two! Also be on the look out for "International" food shops in the area you are staying in. You may score some delicacies from home at those, as well!

5. Don't wallow!

While it is okay to acknowledge your sadness and longing for home, it's also important to not dwell in it. Trust me, you will regret it later! Get out of your apartment and go explore your new neighborhood!

6. Be a tourist in your new city!

It's alright to not know everything about your new surroundings. They are unfamiliar to you, after all. If the city you're in offers any kinds of walking tours, classes, or any other cultural events--take advantage of that! It's a great way to get to know the city better and participate in the culture.

7. Keep yourself busy

The busier you are, the less time you'll have to sit and feel sorry for yourself. Use idle time to instead go for a walk, study, watch movies, shop--basically just live like a local!
