1. Pack Warm Clothing…For A Caribbean Cruise?! Yes!
Bringing some warn clothing for a Caribbean cruise may seem counterintuitive, but it’s actually a wise decision. Here are five reasons why it’s important to include warm clothing in your cruise packing list:
• Changing Weather Conditions: Even on a Caribbean cruise, weather conditions can vary throughout your voyage. While you may expect warm temperatures in the ports of call, it’s essential to remember that evenings at sea or in certain regions can get cooler. Additionally, if your cruise takes you to destinations with different climates or seasons, you might encounter cooler temperatures or unexpected weather changes. Having warm clothing options ensures you can adapt to these variations and stay comfortable throughout your trip.
• Air Conditioning on the Ship: Cruise ships are well-known for their air-conditioned interiors, including restaurants, theaters, and cabins (and some have ice skating rinks). These controlled environments aim to provide comfort to passengers but can sometimes feel chilly, especially in common areas where air conditioning is set at cooler temperatures. Having a light jacket, sweater, or shawl can help you stay cozy during indoor activities and evening events on the ship.
• Windy Conditions: Cruising at sea often involves the presence of ocean breezes or wind, especially at night, which can make the air feel cooler than the actual temperature. If you plan on spending time on the ship’s deck, enjoying the views or participating in outdoor activities, having a light jacket or windbreaker can help shield you from the breeze and keep you comfortable.
• Excursions and Activities: Cruise vacations often include exciting excursions and activities that may expose you to different climates or environments. For example, if you’re going on a hike, exploring a glacier, or visiting higher altitudes, temperatures can drop significantly. By packing a few warm clothing items, such as a long-sleeved shirt, a light sweater, or a pair of leggings, you’ll be prepared for these adventures and ensure your comfort throughout.
• Formal Nights and Evening Events: Many cruises include formal nights or special evening events where dressing your best is encouraged. These occasions often take place in air-conditioned venues and can be more enjoyable if you have a stylish wrap, jacket, or shawl to complement your outfit and keep you warm.
By packing warm clothing items, you’ll have the flexibility to adapt to changing weather conditions, enjoy indoor activities comfortably, and stay cozy during breezy moments on the ship. Remember to check the weather forecast for your cruise destinations and consider the specific activities and events you plan to participate in. Having a few versatile and lightweight warm clothing options ensures you’re prepared for any situation, allowing you to fully enjoy your cruise vacation without worrying about unexpected temperature changes.
2. Normal Dining Rules Do Not Apply On A Cruise Ship
Cruise ships offer a variety of dining options, as well as different styles. From the standard “main dining” for dinners on cruises (which are included already in your cruise fare), to having different specialty restaurants onboard (which come with a set one-time fee), to a-la-carte style restaurants where you pay for each item you order, or the free casual dining options around the ship, there are sure to be great options for everyone. Regardless of which type of these restaurants you are dining at, there are some dining rules that do not apply on cruise ships that you would normally have on land.
• You can order more than one entree, multiple appetizers, and numerous desserts. There really is no limit to what you can ask for or order – even though it might seem that way based on the menu or restaurant you are in. If you see 3 appetizers you really want to try, you can’t decide between the filet or seabass, or want to taste 4 different desserts…just ask and you shall receive! Don’t be shy or embarrassed, this is normal and completely acceptable
3. Private Balconies Are Not Really Private
When it comes to cruise ship accommodations, one feature that often draws passengers’ attention is the balcony. The idea of having a private outdoor space with panoramic ocean views is undoubtedly appealing. However, it’s important to understand that balconies on cruise ships may not offer the level of privacy that you might expect. Here are four reasons why:
• Proximity to Neighbors: Cruise ship balconies are typically separated by dividers or partitions, but these dividers may not provide complete privacy. Depending on the design of the ship and the type of balcony you have, you might find yourself in close proximity to neighboring balconies. This means you could easily see and hear your neighbors, and they could do the same. Conversations, music, and other noises can easily travel, impacting the tranquility of your balcony experience.
• Visibility from Above and Below: Another factor to consider is that balconies on cruise ships are often visible from both above and below. Passengers on higher decks or those looking down from public areas might have a clear view of your balcony. Similarly, if you are on a lower deck, you may be able to see people on the decks above you. This limits the feeling of seclusion and can make it challenging to relax fully.
• Crew Access: Cruise ship crews need access to balconies for maintenance and safety purposes. This means you may occasionally encounter crew members passing by or performing tasks near your balcony. While they are respectful of your privacy, their presence can still disrupt the sense of exclusivity you might expect.
• Noise from Public Areas: If your balcony is located near a public area on the ship, such as a pool deck or an outdoor bar, you may experience noise disturbances. While cruise lines make efforts to minimize noise impact, it’s essential to be aware that lively activities and music from these areas can filter through to your balcony, affecting your quiet moments.
Despite these factors, balconies on cruise ships still offer valuable advantages, such as the opportunity to enjoy fresh air, beautiful views, and a personal outdoor space.
4. Marijuana – Just Leave It At Home
Marijuana is now legal in many states for recreational use, as well as for medicinal purposes. There are tons of CBD products available now as well. Even if your cruise sails from somewhere where it’s legal, or if you have a prescription, cruise lines follow federal law meaning it is not allowed. Additionally, many places you sail to may not allow it also. It’s best to leave it at home and not risk bringing it.
5. Disembarking – You Can Leave Whenever You Want
Disembarking is the process of getting off the cruise ship. The cruise line will typically organize disembarkation by deck number and give you a certain time when you will be called to get off the cruise and head home. This process can take hours, but it doesn’t need to.
If you already have all of your bags, you can just head down whenever you like. The staff doesn’t check which deck you’re on and remember, their goal is to get everyone off the ship as quickly as possible. Cruises have a very quick turnaround with new passengers arriving and getting onboard usually less than one hour after the last cruise has completed disembarkation. Everyone getting off as quick as possible is beneficial.
It’s important to know, there can be long lines right at the beginning of disembarking, so it can be helpful to wait for a little bit unless you’re in a rush. If you have an early flight, don’t worry, you’re not breaking the rules by leaving earlier.
6. Arcade-style Casino Games That Seem Skill Based, Are Not Skill Based
When heading through the casino on your cruise ship (most cruise ships do have casinos), you will see arcade style games such as a claw grabber to pick up packs of real cash, or maybe a game where you push the button to extend a robotic arm to try and knock down a gaming system, iPad or other prizes. These games, rely on random chance and luck rather than skill or strategy. Here are four reasons why arcade-style casino games on cruises are considered random (and not really skill based):
• Random Number Generators (RNG): Most casino games on cruise ships, including arcade-style games, use Random Number Generators (RNG) to determine the outcomes. An RNG is a computer program that generates random numbers, which determine the symbols or cards displayed on the game’s screen. The RNG ensures that each spin, roll, or button push is independent and unpredictable, making it impossible to predict or influence the outcome based on skill alone.
• Lack of Decision-Making Elements: Arcade-style casino games typically lack decision-making elements that would allow players to use their skills to influence the outcome. These games often involve simple mechanics and rely heavily on chance. For example, in a claw grabbing game, the claw can provide different strength at times depending on the RNG to pick up the cash.
• Payout Percentage and House Edge: Arcade-based casino games on cruise ships are designed with a specific payout percentage and house edge. The payout percentage represents the amount of money that is returned to players over time, while the house edge represents the casino’s statistical advantage. These factors ensure that the games remain profitable for the casino in the long run. While individual players may experience winning or losing streaks, the overall outcome is determined by the game’s mathematical probabilities.
• Regulatory Compliance: Cruise ship casinos are subject to regulations and oversight to ensure fairness and integrity. Gaming commissions or regulatory bodies may set standards and requirements for the operation of casino games, including the use of certified RNGs. These measures aim to ensure that the games are random and provide a fair chance to all players.
It’s important to understand that while arcade-style casino games on cruises may offer entertainment and excitement, they are primarily games of chance rather than skill. Players should approach these games with the understanding that outcomes are determined by random factors and enjoy them as a form of leisure and entertainment rather than relying on skill-based strategies.
7. Privacy In Your Cruise Cabin May Not Be What You Think It Is
While cruise cabin stewards are trained professionals who respect guests’ privacy, it’s always wise to take precautions and keep personal items out of sight. Here are five reasons why:
• Respect for Personal Space: Cruise cabin stewards strive to provide exceptional service while maintaining a respectful distance from guests’ personal space. However, they do enter cabins to clean, restock supplies, and perform other tasks. Keeping personal items out of plain sight helps maintain a boundary between your private space and the steward’s duties.
• Confidentiality: Maintaining privacy ensures that personal and confidential items remain secure. While cruise ship staff members are generally trustworthy, it’s better to err on the side of caution and safeguard sensitive documents, valuable items, or anything you’d prefer to keep confidential.
• Peace of Mind: Knowing that your personal items are safely stored away can bring peace of mind during your cruise vacation. It allows you to relax and enjoy your time onboard without unnecessary worries or concerns about the visibility of your belongings.
• Avoid Misunderstandings: Leaving personal items exposed can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or accidental actions by cabin stewards. For example, if a steward sees an item left out that appears to be trash, they might inadvertently throw it away, not knowing your intentions were to keep the item.
• Protecting Valuables: Keeping valuable items hidden can help deter any potential theft or misplaced belongings. While cruise ships have security measures in place, it’s always wise to take precautions and keep valuable items, such as jewelry, passports, and electronics, in a secure location.
8. There Are Special Meet Up Groups For A Variety Of Groups
Are you a single cruiser looking for people to spend your trip with, a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, or maybe you have battled issues with alcohol in the past? You might not have realized that there are meet ups for groups such as these on board!
Typically these groups are self led, but they will be listed in the daily planner with a time and place to meet up. If you’re looking for the meeting regarding issues with alcohol, this will be typically be listed as “Friends with Bill W” which is named after the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Cruise ships have evolved into inclusive and diverse environments that cater to various special interest groups, providing a sense of community and the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals. These special meetups for groups like the LGBTQIA+ community and AA create an inclusive and supportive environment on the cruise ship. They offer participants the opportunity to connect with others who share similar interests or experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding.
It’s important to note that the availability of these meetups may vary depending on the cruise line, ship, and itinerary. It’s advisable to check with the cruise line in advance to ensure that the desired activities or support options will be available during the chosen voyage. Participating in these special meetups provide an opportunity to connect with others, build relationships, and create lasting memories while enjoying the incredible amenities and destinations offered by the cruise ship.
9. Security Cameras Are Everywhere
Yes, security cameras are everywhere, as they are required by law to ensure the safety of all passengers. The one place where you won’t find any cameras are your stateroom. Cruise lines prioritize the well-being of their passengers and crew, and security cameras play a crucial role in monitoring and maintaining a secure environment onboard. Here are some key reasons why security cameras are on cruises:
• Comprehensive Coverage: Cruise ships are equipped with security cameras in various areas, including public spaces, hallways, stairwells, entertainment venues, dining areas, and outdoor decks. These cameras provide comprehensive coverage to monitor activities and ensure the safety of passengers and crew members on the entire ship.
• Surveillance Control Centers: Most cruise ships have dedicated surveillance control centers where security personnel can monitor the live feed from the cameras. These centers are typically staffed 24/7 to maintain constant vigilance.
• Safety and Crime Prevention: Security cameras are essential for deterring and preventing criminal activities onboard. They can help identify and investigate incidents such as theft, vandalism, or unauthorized access. The presence of cameras can act as a deterrent and promote a safer environment for everyone on the ship.
• Emergency Response: In the event of an emergency, security cameras can aid in response and coordination efforts. They provide real-time visuals and help security personnel assess situations, guide emergency responders, and ensure an effective response.
• Passenger Safety and Accountability: Security cameras contribute to passenger safety by monitoring public areas and identifying potential hazards or unsafe behavior. Additionally, they can help establish accountability in cases where incidents occur or disputes arise among passengers or crew members.
It’s important to note that while security cameras are widely used on cruises, passenger privacy is also a significant concern. Cruise lines have policies and procedures in place to protect passenger privacy and comply with applicable privacy laws. These policies dictate how the recorded footage is accessed, stored, and used, typically limiting access to authorized personnel for security and investigative purposes.
10. Bring A Shoe Organizer – Not Only For Shoes
Cruise Cabins can be small, and making the most use of space is essential. This Door Organizer with 15 pockets conveniently holds shoes, hats, clothes or other items. You have numerous options on where this can hang in your cruise cabin – the back of the bathroom door, adjoining door or even over the closet.
Cruise cabins can be small and lacking in storage space, and it can be challenging to keep your belongings organized and easily accessible. Having a door organizer can help maximize the use of space in your cabin and keep your belongings neat and tidy.
Personally, when we cruise, we find that having a door organizer was extremely helpful. It allowed us to keep all of our essentials, such as sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and shoes within reach and in one place. This made it easy to quickly grab what I needed without having to dig through my luggage or clutter up the limited surface space in the cabin.
In addition to providing easy access to your belongings, a door organizer can also help keep your cabin tidy. By having designated pockets for different items, you can avoid leaving things scattered around the cabin and create a more organized and relaxing space.
11. Decorate Your Cabin Door
Having these Fun & Colorful Door Magnets on our cruise was fantastic for several reasons.
First of all, it made it easy for us to identify our cabin from a distance. The magnets are very colorful and stand out, making it especially helpful when we were returning to our room after a long day of exploring. We didn’t have to search for our cabin number, and we knew we were in the right place.
Secondly, the magnets were an excellent way to celebrate a birthday! It made it even more fun for my wife because a bunch of people would always wish her a Happy Birthday when they walked by our cabin.
We had several people ask us about our magnets and where we got them. We even ended up making some new friends just because of these magnets! They are practical, fun, and helped us connect with other passengers. We will definitely use them again on our next cruise.
