One of the prettiest towns in Hokkaido, Japan, Otaru is a place with an undeniable nostalgic feel. With its charming streets lit by gas lamps, the canal, and old warehouses, it’s a town that makes you feel as though you’ve just stepped into the past – it’s a wonderful feeling. You could be visiting for a day or planning to stay a bit longer – however long it is, if you have your camera with you, you’ll be endlessly clicking away.

The City Canal

The city is full of places that dazzle. Among them is the Otaru Canal, loved by couples or anyone who wants to feel a touch of romance. The atmosphere changes with the seasons, so there’s always something new in store.

In winter, everything is covered in soft, white snow. In summer, green ivy wraps around old buildings, giving the whole area a timeless feel. During the day, local artists set up by the canal, drawing visitors with their exquisite artwork and handmade crafts. Night-time is illuminated by the gas lamps lighting the canal banks. If you're here with your partner, strolling along the gaslit canal banks is a must.

If you’re visiting in February, you’ll be treated to the Road of Snow Lights festival, during which the canal is lined with various sculptures, each holding little lanterns that light up the path.

Looking for accommodation in the area? Grand Park Otaru, which is a four-star Hokkaido hotel in Japan, is less than 10 minutes from the canal.

Historical Museum and the Rail Museum

Are you a history buff? Then you should spend some time at the Otaru City Museum. It has two sections: the main historical museum and the railway museum.

The Historical Museum is just a short walk from the Otaru Canal. It brings to life the story of Otaru, starting from when the Ainu people settled in the area, and it was still called Otarunai. The building itself is fascinating. Built in the 1890s, it was once used as a warehouse. Like many museums in Japan, it’s closed on Tuesdays, but you can still take pictures outside.

The Railway Museum is nearby, set up in an old train station. It’s small, but there’s a lot to see and photograph. Real trains outside are a fun discovery, and inside, there is a collection of model trains.

Otaru Steam Clock

This is one of the most famous sights in Otaru. Just as the name suggests, it’s a clock that runs on steam. Modelled after an existing steam clock in Canada, it was made to be gifted to the city of Otaru. Every fifteen minutes, the clock lets out a series of chimes. When the hour strikes, steam rises from the top – a magical sight you’ll want to capture.

Sakaimachi Street

A small street close to the canal, Sakaimachi Street, is a must-do for anyone wanting to get a glimpse of everyday life in Japan. It’s also great for picking up souvenirs, trying street food, and taking pictures. Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, this street was lined with warehouses and offices of Western trading companies.

Otaru’s economy changed, and the street was transformed into a lively shopping area with all kinds of shops, cafés, restaurants, and even small museums. One of the best things about Sakaimachi Street is the glass workshops. You can watch the artisans at work or even make your own masterpiece. The Glass Palace, full of handmade glasswork, is a must-visit.

Final Thoughts

Otaru is historical, charming, and beautiful. If you’re visiting, you must bring your camera because you’re going to encounter so many photo-worthy moments. Plan your trip, stay close to the attractions, and you're sure to have a memorable experience.
