Wesley's Favorite Forgotten Texas Rangers Players: Part 2

Back for a second helping

By Mark Wesley Pritchard Published 2 months ago 4 min read

Greetings, baseball nerds and fellow Rangers fans! Recently, I posted a story about my favorite Texas Rangers players that fans might have a recollection of in passing or vaguely, but no one talks about these days. If you would like to see my previous story about that, click the link down below and see if any of your favorites made the list. I'm back for a second part of this story. Just to note, I won't be highlighting players like Michael Young or Ian Kinsler on this list, since Rangers fans are fully aware of who they are. Alright, let's get this show on the road!

Éric Gagné

Éric Serge Gagné was born in Montreal, Quebec on January 7, 1976. In his 10-year MLB career, Gagné played for four different teams, one of them was with the Boston Red Sox, where he won his first and only World Series title in 2007. In December of that same year, he signed a one-year, six-million-dollar deal with the Texas Rangers. He had a 2-0 record with an ERA of 2.16 during his tenure in Texas. Gagné officially retired from baseball in April 2010. In late 2007, Gagné was part of the Mitchell Report. If you aren't familiar of what that was, it was an investigation conducted by then Democratic Senator George Mitchell of Maine investigating Major League Baseball players who have allegedly used steroids or performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). The most notable names in that report include Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Jason Giambi. The former pitcher is now 49 years old as of 2025.

Marlon Byrd

The 2007 Texas Rangers regular season had some of the best players on that roster, such as Michael Young, Ian Kinsler, David Murphy, and the next former MLB player on this list, Marlon Byrd. Born on August 30, 1977, the now 48-year-old former All-Star outfielder played for a whopping 10 different teams in his 15-year career. No, you're not seeing things, nor it's a typo. Those teams include the Philadelphia Phillies twice, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, and of course the Rangers, where he played for them from 2007-2009. In my previous story about the historic 30-3 game between the Rangers and Orioles, he was responsible for hitting the first of two grand slams, while Travis Metcalf hit the second one. Byrd's final MLB appearance was in May 2016 for the then Cleveland Indians (now Cleveland Guardians).

Derek Holland

If you were to search for the word outgoing, chances are it perfectly described Derek Holland. Born Derek Lane Holland on October 9, 1986, in Ohio, the former pitcher who is known as Dutch Oven, played for six different teams in his 13-year MLB career. Baseball America ranked Holland as the second-best prospect in the Rangers organization, behind the next player I'll highlight in a bit. Holland made his Major League Baseball debut with the Texas Rangers in April 2009, where he would spend the next eight years. He made back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011. Holland made his final MLB appearance in 2021 with the Detroit Tigers. He's now 39 years old at the time of this writing.

Neftalí Feliz

Born on May 2, 1988, in the Dominican Republic, Neftalí Feliz Antonio is a pitcher who's currently a free agent. Baseball America ranked him as the top prospect in the Rangers organization, with Derek Holland being second. Feliz made his MLB debut on August 3, 2009, where he struck out four in two scoreless innings. He was made a closer in 2010, replacing Frank Francisco. Just like Holland, he made two consecutive World Series appearance in 2010 and 2011. As of 2025, the now 37-year-old has had two different stints with Caliente de Durango in the Mexican League.

Chris Davis

Dubbed "Crush Davis", Chris Davis's immaculate talent couldn't be ignored. Born on St. Patrick's Day 1986, in Longview, Texas, Christopher Lyn Davis played for only two MLB teams: the Texas Rangers (2008-2011) and the Baltimore Orioles (2011-2020) in his 13-year career. His accolades include becoming an All-Star in 2013 and won a Silver Slugger Award that same year. Davis concluded his professional career with a .233 batting average, 295 home runs, and 780 RBI. In August 2021, he officially announced his retirement from baseball. The former first baseman All-Star is now 39 years old and splits his time between Baltimore, Maryland and Flower Mound, Texas with his wife Jill and their three daughters.
