We talk pucks and objects of that kind. We yell, complain, and analyze in the language of hockey fandom. Gretzky can do no wrong.
Mia Puccio has let Fun and Hard Work Guide Her to Becoming an Academic All American
Click for Slideshow On the John Jay fields of play, if Mia Puccio isn’t moving she’s probably not having fun. So sitting still in the classroom must drive her crazy. But the sedentary change in venue doesn't detract from putting all that kinetic energy to good use. “I like working hard,” said Puccio, and the three-sport athlete has now been rewarded for her drive.

John Jay Gives Second Seeded Byram Hills a Run for Money in First Round Loss
Byram Slideshow On Tuesday February 20, John Jay faced Byram Hills at the Brewster Ice rink and at 6-14, the Wolves were the clear underdogs to the second seed. Still, the boys scored first and held a 2-1 lead deep into the second. So the glass slippers were out for a potential Cinderella run, but in the end, the shine on the Bobcats’ footwear proved too much.

Lovin’ the PWHL. Top Story - March 2024.
The inaugural season for professional women’s hockey is well underway and I, like many North American sports enthusiasts, have cottoned on to the excitement of the games and the fanfare. Most of the women playing are relatively well-known through previous media exposure during Olympic games, World Championships and Rivalry matches between Canada and the United States. Yesterday, March 8, being International Women’s Day, I decided that I would pay tribute to the women of the world in my own little sports-minded way, and watch a PWHL game between the teams from Toronto and Montreal. Casually observing the new teams since the start of the season, I had suspected that the Women’s league was somehow different from the NHL and other men’s hockey leagues around the world. Sometimes these differences don’t show up during the Olympic games or World Championships because of the media focus on winning gold medals and the like. However, during a regular season hockey game, be it a men’s game or a women’s game, one gets a chance to really notice what the respective games are all about. I would therefore like to weigh in on what have formerly been suspicions but now are being seen as true differences between men’s and women’s professional hockey.

Avalanche Game 65 Recap: New Team, Who Dis?
The trade deadline has come and gone, and it was a fruitful one for the Colorado Avalanche. Moments before the 7-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings, the Avs traded for Casey Mittelstadt and Sean Walker. A day later, the Avs traded for two more players; first off, the Avs acquired Brandon Duhaime from the Minnesota Wild, and also traded for Yakov Trenin, formerly of the Nashville Predators. Also, the Avalanche dealt Ben Meyers to the Anaheim Ducks for a draft pick.

Avalanche Game 62 Recap: Bad Timing
The month of March is here; the final full month of the NHL's regular season. For many teams, it's do or die, and regarding the Colorado Avalanche, a playoff spot is inevitable. What isn't inevitable is where the team will finish. The Avs are coming off ending February on a winning note after starting the month on a terrible skid, and the team's own March Madness started in Nashville against a red hot Predators team.

Avalanche Game 61 Recap: Century 29
Leap Day. February 29. A special day that happens every four years, and on this Leap Day, the Colorado Avalanche are one of many NHL teams in action. In Game 61 of the Avs' season, the team is in the Windy City facing off against the Chicago Blackhawks; the third meeting of the season and the Avs' last visit to Chicago. The Avalanche are coming off a huge victory over the Dallas Stars on Tuesday, and while February 29 is a special occurrence, it simply means it's the final day before the NHL's March Madness starts.

Avalanche Game 60 Recap: Dancing With the Dallas Stars
The month of February is almost over. We are on our way to that final home stretch, with barely over 50 days left in the regular season. All 32 teams have something to play for, whether it's the playoffs, or the draft. For the Colorado Avalanche, it's important seeding in the Central Division. It's been rough for the boys in burgundy, blue, and white for the last few weeks, but the Avs are still above ground where it counts, and still have a shot at finishing first in the Central Division for the third straight year.

The Kings Dethroned
If you are a contemporary Oilers fanatic, there is something especially savory about a convincing dethroning of the LA Kings for you and your trusted friends and allies. LA “stole” the venerated Wayne Gretzky from the Oilers' roster many years ago, and in more recent seasons, this has been a bitter and venomous rivalry.

Avalanche Game 59 Recap: Delay of Game
The Colorado Avalanche were coming off an overtime loss in Detroit against the Red Wings, and now, the team was back at home against another Original Six franchise: the Toronto Maple Leafs. This is the second and last regular season meeting between the two clubs; the first one saw the Leafs go up 3-0 in the first period, but the Avalanche came back and won it. This game aired on NHL Network, but despite the Avs being at home, it was the hallowed Hockey Night in Canada feed. I love Hockey Night in Canada. The first time I watched a HNIC game was in 2005-06, when I had NHL Center Ice. Hockey Night in Canada is a CBC staple during the regular season, airing every Saturday during the season, followed by exclusive playoff coverage from the first puck drop in Round 1, Game 1, to the moment the Stanley Cup is awarded.

Life during wartime
Two years ago, Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine. In my usual job as a sports reporter, I don’t normally deal with major global events. Many people better qualified than me have written much about this war. However, a couple of months after the start of the invasion, I spoke to Olexander Peresunko, a hockey player from Ukraine, while he was representing his country at a World Championship Division IB tournament in Poland.
