Recap of Track & Field in 2022

As the college track and field season has come to a close, we will take time to take a look at women in the sport who competed and made things happen in 2022.

Alia Armstrong - LSU

A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Alia Armstrong dominated the 100-meter hurdles in the NCAA this year. She won the NCAA championship with a time of 12.57 in the final. Her fastest time of the season actually came in the preliminary round of the NCAA Championships when she finished the race at 12.55. Armstrong also won her first SEC gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles as well with a non-legal wind-aided finish of 12.46. At that meet the 5-5 sophomore also won a gold medal in the 400-meter relay. A talented sprinter as well, Armstrong struck gold in the 60 meters with a time of 7.11 at the SEC indoor championships.

Jadyn Mays - Oregon

All-American Jadyn Mays ran her fastest career time in the 60 meters (7.09) during the preliminary round of the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. She won the bronze medal in the final with a time of 7.11. She earned her second straight outdoor 400-meter relay gold medal at the PAC-12 Championships. Mays qualified for the NCAA outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 100 meters and 400-meter relay. She and her teammates placed third in the 400-meter relay with a finish of 42.64. Mays is a native of Glendale, Arizona.

Faith Baxter - Miami University

Faith Baxter wrapped up her collegiate career winning two bronze medals at the Mid-American Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She ran a time of 54.71 in a third-place 400 meters finish. Baxter's final race was a 1,600-meter relay effort which gave her one last third place medal. During the indoor season she performed with the runner-up Distance Medley Relay at the conference championship meet. Baxter has earned multiple medals throughout her career. In 2021 she was a silver medalist in the 1,600-meter relay at the Mid-American Conference outdoor meet after taking the bronze in the 400 meters. The Lima, Ohio native's first conference championship came during her freshman season when she won the outdoor 1,600-meter relay in 2019.

Brianna Smith - Duke

Duke's Brianna Smith won the ACC indoor high jump championship at 1.81, which is the best jump of her career. Her efforts contributed to Duke's share of the overall ACC championship, which it tied with Virginia Tech. Smith, a native of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, scored an outdoor season win in the high jump at the Texas Relays before placing fifth in the high jump at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She concluded her season in the high jump competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Round.

Zionn Pearson - Nebraska

Zionn Pearson is a jumper from Maryland Heights, Missouri. The Nebraska Cornhusker recorded a top three finish in the long jump with a mark of six meters at the Drake Relays. During the 2022 indoor season she had a top three long jump finish at the Nebraska Adidas Classic and another one in the triple jump at the Nebraska Graduate Classic. In 2019 Pearson earned a bronze medal in the long jump at 6.09 meters at the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships. Later that year she posted her first collegiate win in the long jump at the Wichita State Herm Wilson Invitational during outdoor season.
