On Tuesday January 7, the combined teams of Somers, Yorktown and John Jay gathered at Dynamics gym in Mohegan Lake, New York and took to the obstacles against the combined team of Lakeland Panas. A 179-175 victory for the triumvirate, the outcome was less important for one returning team member, who concentrated her efforts on getting recruiting last year.

Happy to be back, said McKenna Mullins of Somers, “It’s less serious, more fun, and it's more of a team aspect than an individual one.”

Still, the Tusker is aiming to reach the states and do some real damage. “Maybe I can place in the all around competition,” said the senior.

She was on the level on the uneven bars, though. "Where you release from the low bar to the high,” said the gymnast, “I had a good toe shot.”

Unfortunately, she didn’t do as well on the structure, which had only one surface. Falling off the balancing beam, her attitude is to always keep her head up no matter what happens. “I say I’m disappointed in myself, but I take a deep breath and keep going.”

Kayla Cambareri didn’t let her fall off the beam get her down either. “I had a redo, and I stuck it,” said the John Jay gymnast of her back hand, back tuck move.

On the floor, the Wolf was in step with the musical selection. An upbeat classic song,” said Cambareri, “I thought it was the best fit for me.”

With upbeat and slow parts, the moves were pretty good too, but the bars is the area she wants to improve on. “I have to make my routine more consistent and not drag my feet on the lower bar as much,” said the junior.

As for Kaitlin Gannon of Somers, there was no such lag with her high step on the floor competition. She danced to a tango beat and didn’t need a partner to translate the vibe. “I like to be sassy and show off my moves,” the Tusker extolled.

Of course, it didn’t hurt that the landings were squarely on point. “I stuck all my passes,” Gannon assured.

Not bad, her favorite part is where the lift off the vault grabs the most air. “I feel like I’m flying,” she said.

Amelia Carozza, on the other hand, reveled in the grounding she mastered on the floor. “I did my tumbling well,” said the Yorktown gymnast.

In a groove, her tune also did a number for her routine. “It’s powerful,” said the Husker of Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio.

Making the states last year, she still eyes improvement - especially on the balance beam. “I want to do my back tuck better,” said the senior.

Conversely, Berkely Seigal feels she has a pretty good handle on the narrow. “It’s really just staying tight and staying focused and balanced,” said the Wolf of the beam.

Her preference swings elsewhere, though. “I like how quick and simple the bars are, and how the fundamentals don’t really change,” she said.

The same probably goes for her overall goals, and Gannon’s outlook gave voice for the whole team. “I hope to keep doing well in each event, keep sticking everything and getting good scores,” she concluded.
