Crowd Shots

Somers treated their fans to three exciting games to start the season, but the fanbase probably didn’t mind consecutive blowouts of John Jay and Fox Lane. So with Harrison possibly putting the Tusker to the test like they did last year in the section finals, drama returning on Sunday October 13 had to be on the minds of the home crowd.

Not for long, Somers was up 14 before anyone even blinked, and the onslaught had QB Miguel Iglesias succinctly summing up the continuing roll. “We’re putting things together,” he said after the 40-3 victory.

Conversely, Harrison didn’t take long to start falling apart. Fumbling the opening kickoff, the Huskies were hemmed in and were soon punting from inside the ten.

Somers took over at the 36, Mason Kelly got the first five on the ground, and Dean Palazzolo followed with a diving catch at the 15. First down, Kelly did the rest by bumping outside for the game’s first points with 7:27 left in the first.

Gavin Kelly made it 7-0, and it wasn’t long before the kicker was teeing off again. Three plays and out, Somers started at their own 35, and Palazzolo made sure that Harrison retained the lead in number of plays run from scrimmage.

Iglesias threw a screen to the home sideline, and the receiver’s cut around the defense was pretty straight forward for the QB. “He makes moves, he does what he does,” said Iglesias of his teammate’s 65 yard touchdown reception.

At 4:37, Harrison tried again, and the offense made it past midfield. But an illegal procedure call didn’t help, and forced to punt, Harrison put Somers on the 23.

A Palazzolo reception gained seven, and that left Kelly trying his hand at catching. Screen right, the back’s bobble didn’t keep him from moving the chains. So in keeping, Palazzolo briefly took over the running duties.

Unfortunately, the receiver’s run to the home side led to a five yard loss, and now second and 16, Iglesias took a turn at multitasking. Dropping back, Iglesias stood down the collapsing pocket, took off for the sideline, and with spacing running out, he hit an open Jackson Whipple.

First down at the 20, Somers continued to spread the wealth. Iglesias connected with Cameron Violante on the left, and switching sides for the quarter, Kelly ran in the TD.

21-0 now, Harrison showed signs of life and drove the field to the Somers 13. The Huskies were past the point of paddles, though, and Iglesias made the call. On third and 11 from the 15, the pass went up, and the quarterback/cornerback flashed his hands with the interception in the end zone

2:53 left in the half, the Tusker offense took its foot off the gas, and the status quo remained when the teams went into the locker rooms. So Palazzolo quickly upset the order upon return. He received the kickoff, headed for the pack and emerged from the morass with nothing but open space on the sideline.

An 85 yard touchdown, he wasn’t done yet gobbling up large chunks of green. After the defense got the ball back on downs at the Somers 36, Palazzolo went left to right. First the receiver muscled a first down to the fifty on a screen to the home sideline, and following two Kelly runs to the 30, Palozzolo hauled in on the visitor sideline for a 34-0 game at 4:26.

Cameron Violante received the final TD pass from Iglesias, but a Harrison field goal on the final play didn’t dampen anyone’s spirit. This especially as the holiday brought back some enthusiastic partisans from last year’s team, and that had Iglesias feeling the togetherness. “It shows our community in Somers,” he concluded.
