On Friday October 10, Somers hosted Carmel at the high school, and the perfect fall night brought a calm over the big Tusker crowd. But when Carmel kicked off to Jackson Whipple the crispness was sucked out of the air like a lightning bolt, and the tone was set for the rest of the night.
The Tusker burst upfield for a 75 score, and four touchdowns later, Somers had an easy 35-0 victory.
Carmel’s turn after 13 seconds, the crowd awaited to see if a game was in the offing. An incomplete pass and two Joey Fink tackles were a pretty good indication of what was to come.
Still, Somers faltered on their first offensive possession, and when Carmel got across midfield on a reception to Miles Parchen, the game suddenly had some juice to it. A personal foul added to the drama until the Somers defense reasserted itself. Jaron Faulkner smothered Franke DeGrazio at the line of scrimmage, and strong secondary coverage forced a pair of Ram incompletions.
Carmel punting, the Rams did hem in the home team with 6:15 left in the first period. At the three, Somers was unfazed by the tight surroundings behind them. After Jayden Abruzese got his team a little room to the seven, Dean Palazzolo got around the corner for a first down at the 27 yard line.
The gears now grinding, Tristan Iglesias kept the next three plays to the 35, and the first down put Palazzolo on familiar ground. Down the field with a step, the receiver pulled in his quarterback’s perfect loft, and Somers led the game by a score of 14-0.
Carmel did show some life again, though. Parchen made a leaping grab on the sideline, and the Carmel crowd had something to cheer about. Not for long, the Rams were soon punting, and the Tuskers were in complete control.
That is until Somers coughed up the ball at midfield, and the Rams had life again. Only briefly, the miscue only put the Tuskers in a three down holding pattern. The offense started up at the 26, and before Carmel knew it, the field switched to the other 20.
Following Abruzese’s 18 yard run to the 44, Iglesias added another copilot to the crew of elephants. Dylan Jimenez reeled in his QB’s toss over the middle, and it was first down from the 23.
So Abruzese taking a breather, the running back exhaled and did the rest. Three runs and he was in the end zone for a 21-0 lead.
4:08 left in the second period, Carmel had no answer, and the best they could do was punt away from Palazzolo. Good try, he ran all the way to the Carmel sideline, reached up for the high bounce, and after securing the ball with one hand, the punt returner took off for the other side of the field.
All Carmel could do was chase, and they didn’t catch up until the senior reached the eight. A play later, Luke Balancia was in the end zone, and the running clock was the only defense that proved effective for Carmel. It was enough to keep Iglesias from hooking up with Dean Monachelli for a 54 yard touchdown pass, and with 6:21 left in the third, mercy allowed an early night for everyone.
