On Wednesday January 22, the Somers bowling team hit Route 35, and while ready to roll against Ossining at the Cortlandt Lanes, Coach Erik Tetro always looks beyond the scoresheet to measure success for his team. “All I really care about is them learning to be on a team, to pick each other up and to become good friends,” said Tetro. Of course, the coach doesn’t mind if the bowling goes well too.
“Learn as they go,” he said. “That’s what they have done and everyone’s average has gone up this year.” And a 1796-1696 victory, proves the point in a season that has seen more wins than the last three years, according to the proud coach.
At the top of the bowling spreadsheet, Giuseppe Arena had a series of 509 with a high score of 186 and has made the most of his reason for joining three years ago. “I got bored and was looking for something to do,” he said.
Up 50 pins since he began, the Tusker is also pretty matter of fact in regards to the improvements made. “I don’t even know what I did,” Arena said.
Tetro might not be able to pinpoint either but has no problem describing what he sees from his bowler. His curve, said Tetro, “when the ball hits it explodes.”
Not the only hook on a Tusker roll, Jayden Ferry has started to master the calculus of the sport too. “He’s got a good curve,” said Tetro.
Good for scores of125, 131 and a 111, Ferry spoke to the finer points of the game. “You start from underneath the ball, bring your hand up and around and eventually you find your spot and sit with that,” said the sophomore.
He’s also got a better sense of the footwork involved, and his goal is to eventually qualify for the sectional one tournament by bringing his average from 110 to 180. But the bowller is not just in it to win it. “I’m really enjoying the sport and love the guys on the team,” Ferry said.
Benny Silk goes on a similar mindset when he rolls. “I wanted to see what it felt like to be on a sports team and have that experience,” said the senior.
A 106, 89 and an 83, he’s gone from averaging around 60 to putting up a 129 last week. He credits his footwork for the upgrade. “That’s helped me get the ball down faster,” said Silk.
Tyler Fazio aims to be on his toes too and a game one 101 felt pretty good. His 74 and 91 didn’t sit as well, though. “I need to work on paying attention, focusing more on what I'm doing and throwing the ball from the right spot,” said the senior.
On the other hand, he hasn’t been able to go wrong since he decided join up two years ago. “I wanted to try a new sport instead of sitting home,” said Fazio.
No one to meet there, he felt pretty good about hitting the trifecta on this day. “Amazing,” Fazio concluded, “this is the first time we’ve won all three of our games.”
Note : Aubrey Rodrigo had himself a pretty good day too. His sscores of 121, 156 and 96 was second among the Somers Tusker bowlers.
