On Tuesday December 10, John Jay hosted Somers at the high school and the Wolves were very obliging through the first seven matches. A 27-11 lead for the visiting Tuskers, the uphill battle that remained wasn’t so worrisome for John Jay's Austin Omin.

“152, 160, 170 pounds, we always expect those weights to pin out,” said the 152 pounder, and adding in two heavyweight forfeits, a 47-27 victory was the way it ended.

On the other end of the roster, David Corrales led off, but his day got a much earlier start than 4:30 PM. “I was really hyped up all day because it’s fun to wrestle in front of your family and friends,” said the freshman.

Not so much for the other guy, his match proved. “He tied me up, so I did a slideby. Then I started working my top once he was down,” explained the wrestler. “I put in an arm bar, and I pinned him.”

The 6-0 lead did not last, though. Somers registered pins in the next two matches, and the Tuskers went up by a score of 12-6.

Jon Aniello kept the run contained nonetheless. In building a 15-1 lead, the Wolf stayed on a steep incline. “I like the roll and tilt,” said the 124 pounder. “You get the wrist, forward roll it and get the back points.”

The match called on an injury default, he would happily have wrestled the full six minutes for the therapeutic nature of the sport. Struggling with ADHD when he was a younger kid, wrestling came to serve as an effective elixir. “It helps me get the energy out,” he revealed.

Ryan Ball, on the other hand, didn’t expend very much energy for his part at 131 pounds. He pinned Nate Nosworthy in 26 seconds, and Cal Ehrmann followed up with an 8-3 victory over Wyatt Gierer.

Unfortunately for Somers, they were done scoring, and Omin began the John Jay run on his feet. “I saw him stepping pretty heavy, and I thought, I’m going to hit him with my low single,” said the Wolf.

Omin’s anticipation turned out to be correct, and on top, the grappler continued to work the angles. “I got a little tilt,” said Omin, and he was done for the day.

Only 78 seconds needed to take care of business, Jojo Kern wasn’t getting paid by the hour either. “My favorite part of wrestling is hearing the mat slap,” said the senior after only 15 seconds.

Of course, the time definitely wasn't too brief after missing all of last year with an injury. Back on the mat, said 160 pounder, “It feels like I am home.”

The same goes for his actual home, where his next meal was definitely earned. “Oh yo, I’m going crazy, I’m probably having steak,” Kern said with anticipation.

Maybe well done, Somers was cooked once Jake llanos took out his dinner knife and fork. “My opponent took a bad shot. I capitalized and got a near side cradle,” said the senior.

Good for the pin, the two forfeits were on the way, and Omin’s prediction was right on the nose.
