John Jay Crowd Shots
On Tuesday April 15, spring break let the lacrosse team sleep a little late. It also meant the Wolves took to Contest Field early versus Burnt Hills. But John Jay woke up first and also stayed up late.
The boys scored the first five goals and went onto an easy 12-3 victory.
Blake O’Callaghan was the first to sip his coffee, though. On a shot from his left, the John Jay goalie barely flinched and let his catcher do the rest.
Back the other way, his counterpart did the same on John Hartney’s shot from the goal line, but the Burnt Hills transition didn’t go as well. Nick Harris picked up an errant pass and cruised straight in for a 1-0 lead.
At 8:45, John Jay didn’t let their guests hit the snooze button. James Bysshe won the draw, Nick Rinaldi eventually got the ball on the left and connected on the overhead with only 33 seconds elapsing.
2-0, O’Callaghan was up next. Twice the Burnt Hills shots came in low and both times the Jay goalie had the short hop. The mastery then had Gavin Carvajal staying on the level. He went around a Hartney pick, and his sidearm made it three in a row.
51 seconds left in the first, the draw went to Burnt Hills, and O’Callaghan again made it look like he could do this in his sleep. Shot from the right, he snared with his catcher and nonchalantly flipped the ball up to control.
Closing the quarter, John Jay was out of the gate first. After Porter Bysshe was able to scoop up a bad pass, the skier hit the slopes, got the ball ahead and Brendan Corelli set up from behind. He bolted forward, shot off his right foot and the overhead made for a 4-0 lead.
In at 9:24, John Jay got on their tricycle. Tesi started at X, dished to Riley McMahon on the goal line, and Corelli received on the cut. No chance for the Burnt Hills goalie, the 5-0 lead would hold into the half.
Onto the third, pressing defense on the part of John Jay would have an unintended effect. A long pass resulted, and with both teams giving chase, Ty Star came free with a clear path. He shot sidearm, and it was a 5-1 game with 8:40 remaining
Of course, John Jay did not fret. With six minutes to go, Corelli forced his way past the goal line on the right, threaded a pass to Dashiell Stewart on the left, and the Burnt Hill goalie didn’t have a chance.
The margin regained, O’Callaghan kept it there. With an attacker staring him down on the left, O’Callaghan matched his opponent’s stick fakes and came away with the ball on the shot.
Even so, Burnt Hills kept at it. The clock running down, O’Callaghan was beaten on the wraparound with 17 seconds left in the third, and John Jay settled for a 6-2 fourth quarter lead.
12 minutes to go, the rest of the Wolves were more than happy to pick up their goalie. The defense forced a turnover on the opening possession, and the offense took it from there.
Up the field, Tesi would not be denied. His post up and shot on the left had the attacker pick up his own rebound and then he fired for a 7-2 lead.
10:48 remaining, Burnt Hills won the draw, but O’Callaghan was not worried. Once again with a shot right on his doorstep, the Wolf reached up for the save and sparked the offense.
A little serendipity didn’t hurt either. A deflected pass from behind had Hartney on the ball, and he found the net for an 8-2 lead at 9:24.
So the Wolves put the sequence on rewind. O’Callaghan stopped another with his catcher, and back the other way, Dino Rajamani wrapped around at 8:30 to essentially put the game in the bag.
