On Wednesday September 18, John Jay hosted the North Salem Tigers at Contest Field in Cross River, and things got going very quick for the Wolves. The girls started with the ball, and North Salem was left chasing all game long when Abby Mattiello proved faster on her feet than the Tiger goalie.
After receiving the pass ahead from Hayley Frantz, Kayla Cambareri made her move around the exterior defense and led Mattiello on a near collision course in the North Salem crease. The John Jay attacker got their first, and the empty net at 39:25 of the first had the Wolves on their way to a very easy 5-0 win.
So John Jay obviously didn’t let their foot off the pedal, and Cambareri almost did a carbon copy only two minutes later. She intercepted a pass out of the North Salem zone, and her high bounce was just a little too lofty for the head of Mattiello.
Four minutes later at the 33 minute mark of the first, it was Mattiello who got the ball rolling again. She intercepted a pass from the goal line, dribbled through the defense, and after the ball kicked around front and center, the ball skirted to Carly Mangiaracina. The Wolf took aim and kicked just wide of the post from the 15 yard line.
A 2-0 lead came from using the whole field, though. The Wolf defense gathered on a North Salem pass too far ahead of the field, and the responding clear sailed down field to the feet of Mattiello. She controlled and led the ball perfectly for Mangiaracina. The breakaway in play, the attacker lofted the ball just out of reach of the Tiger goalie and under the crossbar with 24:47 remaining in the first half.
Of course, the visiting team tried things the other way too. Zoe Elias found herself with a clear path on the bench sideline and passed ahead nicely to Sienna Paldin. But the North Salem attacker could not outrun Mykel Papa, and North Salem returned to the futile nature of their chase.
Then Papa showed that speed wasn’t the only weapon in the arsenal. Paldin broke down the sideline, and the John Jay defender picked the Tiger’s pocket with her feet.
Another incursion thwarted, John Jay was ready to add on to the score again. On the corner kick, Jordan Kauftheil initially deferred the loft and played a little give and go. Mattiello received, sent right back to the senior striker, and Kauftheil dropped a pass in range of Sela Halaifonua. The senior stepped back to connect and found the net with 7:22 left in the first half.
A 3-0 game to this point, the Wolves were in command, and less than four minutes into the second half, the battle was joined in another winning moment. On another corner kick, the ball went short, bounced through the crease and Frantz was in the clear. She blasted away, and the back of the net made friends with the ball again.
The only thing remaining dropping the white flag on the whole affair. On the left side, Mattiello danced and dribbled between two Tiger defenders and was able to get the ball out front in front of the goal. Squibbing through to the right, Julia Berisha had a direct line, and John Jay hung North Salem up for good on the day.
