Ohio State's Kolie Allen earned singles wins on day one and three of the Buckeye Invitational. The fifth-year senior from Lombard, Illinois, defeated Olivia Dorner of Penn State 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 on day one before dropping a contest against Nicole Hammond of Michigan 6-2, 6-3 on day two. On Day three Allen redeemed herself with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Xavier's Imani Graham.
The Buckeye Invitational took place Oct. 14-16 in Columbus, Ohio. Allen also earned doubles wins on each of the three days. She and Lucia Marzal beat Graham and Kat Lyman of Xavier 7-6 (4) on the first day. Kathleen Jones teamed up with Allen to earn a 6-4 win on day two over Michigan's Nicole Hammond and Gala Mesochoritou and the winning duo toppled Abby Siminski and Blessing Nwaozuzu on the final day 6-4.
Graham, an All-Big East performer at Xavier, collected a singles win over Dorner, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. She got her lone doubles win on day two when she and her teammate Lyman stopped Penn State's Dorner and Karly Friedland.
The lone ranked competitor over the weekend was Michigan's Hammond. She sits at the 113th spot and won each of her singles contests. On day one she beat Zoe Hammod of Kentucky, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, before her previously mentioned win over Allen. Hammond finished her weekend stopping another Buckeye, Shelly Bereznyak 6-2, 6-3. The two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection suffered her only blemish of the Buckeye Invitational in doubles play, but also earned a win with teammate Elizabeth Jones over Kentucky's Hammod and Lidia Gonzalez, 6-3. From Centreville, Virgina, Hammond had the first 20-win season in her three years at Michigan in 2021. She went 23-10 as a singles competitor.
On day three Gonzalez of Kentucky put on a bit of an entertaining performance with her passionate play in a win against Yvonna Zuffova 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. Gonzalez is a third-year competitor from Barcelona, Spain. She was an All-American in 2021, while being named first team All-SEC and to the All-SEC Freshman Team. Earlier in the day, Gonzalez and her teammate Maayla Mills beat Penn State's Zuffova and Dorner 6-1. The first day didn't go so well for the Spainard. Along with dropping her doubles match, she loss on her own to Jones of Michigan, 6-4, 6-4. Gonzalez was on both sides of winning and losing on day two. She lost again in doubles play before winning against Ohio State's Madeline Atway, 6-4, 6-3.
Atway earned the final win of the weekend as she and Siminski of Xavier had a three-set battle. Siminski looked strong in the first set taking it 6-3, but Atway outlasted her in set two edging out Siminski 7-5. For the final set Atway dominated winning 6-0. Atway is a 5-7 junior from nearby Powell, Ohio. Over her career she has earned Accademic All-Big Ten and ITA Scholar Athlete honors.
