College Football Players Choosing Cash Over Championships
Why are players choosing cash over championships
College Football, the sport that most people will tell you is so fun to watch has been changing right before our eyes. NIL has invaded the sport and has forever changed this beloved sport. Gone are the dreams of National Championships being the goal replaced by a money grab. Can this sport get back to its glory? Let's take a deeper look into what has happened and why.
For the longest time, College Football was about getting into college playing your way onto a team and winning a National Championship. Many players worked there way for four years for a chance to start an build relationships and powerful teams. Rivilaries were formed as most players stayed for 4 years as that is what they promised to do.
It became a sport where it divided families depending on what college a certain kid chose as his next school choice. Thanks to NIL college football is no longer this way anymore. NIL stands for name, image, and likeness in college sports these days. Most people either hate it or love it. There seems to be no normal ground when you talk NIL. The majority of coaches will tell you how much they despise what it has become for college football.
The main reason we have NIL is college football was making billions of dollars and the players were getting nothing in return except an education. Many times players didn't realize besides education they were getting ready for the next step in their lives. In retrospect, I can see why the players have embraced NIL. It has helped many players become millionaires in college and even more will be made in the future.
So, why is NIL bad for college football? The main problem you will see in college football is no loyalty at all from players like it used to be. Instead of chasing championships players are chasing cash. In a way thats what the NCAA did before NIL so you cannot blame players in that respect.
My main issue with NIL is it has ruined college football in many ways. Colleges now have to be careful who they recruit for their football teams. They do not know when a player will jump into the transfer portal and be gone. Tampering behind the scenes is another big problem that is now starting to get talked about more. Teams can now tamper and unless the player comes forward about it you could never know about it at all.
What's the answer to the NIL problems? There is no real good answer for many reasons. Most people want to see players get what they deserve, but other players are using the system to just collect more money which is not a good thing. When you got players switching all the time how committed is that player or person to a certain team? Building a college football team that can compete year after year becomes tougher.
NIL has its good points and bad points, but more rules or regulations need to be put in place. With more strict regulations in place and changing transfer portal rules could bring back the college football we love again. Only time will tell if the NCAA will step up and do what needs to be done.
In the end, the fans are the ones left trying to figure things out. They see their favorite players leave after one or two seasons with no loyalty at all. For college football, NIL has been a thorn in many people's side. The truth though is NIL is here long term so people will have to embrace it eventually.
