CFL Week 14 Recap: Sinking Ships
The Toronto Argonauts find their playoff hopes fading after a disastrous visit to Ottawa

You know, I had been looking forward to this all season. It had been hell for the Toronto Argonauts in the East Division standings. We could not catch the Ottawa Redblacks. Labour Day in Hamilton was an absolute disaster. Yet we could at least save face in the final week of the heart of the season. This was the first meeting between the Argos and Redblacks. This was our first chance to get things done and make a dent in the pursuit for at least second place in the East Division. Smooth sailing, right?
Even the S.S. Minnow didn't have this rough of a trip.
This game was dead and buried just before halftime. We were down thirty-one to three at halftime!!! Why is Chad Kelly back?! Why is he still with he Argos?! Why wasn't he suspended for a full season?! The man's a stalker and a sexual harasser! He was too busy doing that shit to focus on the game he was playing! The Argos were winning games with Cameron Dukes! Chad Kelly this season can't beat Ottawa or Hamilton! Dukes won in Montréal! Dukes needs to be starting for the rest of the season, period!
Speaking of Montréal, the Alouettes actually lost to kick off Week 14. The BC Lions, who struggled for a good bit this season, went into the home of the defending Grey Cup Champions, and beat them 37-23. For the Als, who are playoff bound, this was only their second loss of the season, and both of them were home losses. Regarding the rest of the West Division, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders for second straight week, doing so by a score of 26-21. The week ended with the Edmonton Elks blasting the Calgary Stampeders, 37-16, continuing their hot streak in the last near two months.
So we are now two-thirds through the 2024 season, and here's how things stand:

The West Division still has the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the British Columbia Lions tied for first place, with the Bombers holding the tiebreaker. The Bombers were 0-4 and practically dead in the water. They are currently in what I call the "Jeri Ryan streak": winners of Seven of Nine. The Lions have won back-to-back games after losing five straight. The Saskatchewan Roughrders continue to fall; they are now winless in their last seven games after starting 5-1. And look who is out of last place! The Edmonton Elks' win moved them out of the division cellar, and within one point of a playoff position. Edmonton has won five of their last six games after starting 0-7; the hottest team in the league this year. The Calgary Stampeders aren't behind by much, but they do need to wake up.
I had said that the East had been settled for weeks, but I'm not sure. The Ottawa Redblacks are now in the driver's seat for second place due to the Argonauts sputtering. While the Boatmen do appear to have third place locked in, it still may not result in playoffs. The CFL does have the crossover rule, which states that if a fourth place team in one division has a better record than the third place team in the other division, that team can crossover into that division's side of the playoffs. As it stands now, no crossover would occur, but it's getting too close for comfort. The Elks are close behind the Argos in the overall standings. The Boatmen need to get back on track to avoid being ousted via the crossover.
Week 15 will kick off the final stretch of the season, and it will only see three games played. First off, the BC Lions host the Toronto Argonauts on Friday, September 13, and then on Saturday, September 14, the Ottawa Redblacks and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will face off in an Eastern battle, followed by the Calgary Stampeders hosting the Montréal Alouettes.
