This Isn't the World Cup
It was a highly contested soccer match between Serra High School and Valley Christian High School, two West Catholic Athletic League opponents battling it out on the pitch on a Saturday morning. The West Catholic Athletic League, or WCAL as it’s known throughout Northern California, is the premier high school league for all sports. The caliber of athletes on the field competing is quite impressive.

Grass Roots Football: The Ups and Downs
Saturdays are the most stressful day of the week for me. Coordinating all of our club teams, hoping everything goes well without any headaches, hoping the teams behave themselves and don’t bring the club into disrepute, and commuting all over the place to put out the little fires that burn up. All to sit down at the end of the day and start worrying about next week all over again. Do I love it? Of course! Why else would I do it? Would I give it up? Maybe... the temptation of peace, straightforward weeks... a day off! So why do I do it?

5th Grade Somers Girls Win the Tri-County Basketball League Championship at the Buzzer
The 5U Girls TCBL Championship game at 7 Bridges School on Sunday didn’t look like it would amount to much excitement at the outset. Ardsley’s deft little point guard put the ball on the floor, and set her sights for the rim en route to eight first quarter points. The long two her oversized shooting guard drained from the corner didn’t say much for a compelling game either. So, facing a 10-4 deficit after one, Somers looked as the tandem was going to run them out of the gym. But the closure that coach Rob Hawkins got his girls to employ said nothing about giving up, and ultimately had the Tuskers and Lindsay Ulaj sounding their trumpets in a 24-22 buzzer beater.

4 Athletes Who Show the Importance of Workout Variety
People who focus on personal fitness tend to understand the value of mixing things up. Or at least, it’s something we tend to learn to do as we get older. For instance, an athlete who’s used to team competitive sports may ultimately transition to mixed martial arts to scratch that competitive itch; a former swimmer may switch to ballet if it becomes easier to work into a busy schedule. But the best way to mix things up, so to speak, is to do it all at once, such that even if you have a predominant form of exercise you favor, you’re also doing other things to keep your body guessing, and get more total-body exercise.
