Nightmares of Working in Retail Ch. 1
With my awkward social skills, it’s no surprise to most people that I work in retail. When you go shopping, you can almost always bet that you’ll run into an incompetent sales person when you need help. Or, frankly, you don’t want anyone to talk to you. This I can understand as a shopper, because I don’t need your help finding a piece of clothing that’s going to look good on my awkwardly-shaped body. That’s basically a fruitless effort. The answer is nothing, so don’t lead me to the trendy oversized tee shirts, or the ripped mom jeans that don’t hug in any of my good places. My sales persona is a completely different beast. I’m going to bug you about all of your deepest desires and passions, all while wearing a beautiful smile on my face that is only genuine about 50 percent of the time. Good days usually afford me a confrontation or two. I’m going to start telling you about them. While I do my best to not say no to my customers, there are sometimes where you’ll catch me doing the job I am more than happy to be doing.

Abundant Teaching
Losing Passion In today’s education system, it is easy to describe deficiencies in schools. Teachers are working in less than desirable conditions with minimal resources and high expectations. Due to the famine of support public education gets from lawmakers and society in general, education is in a critical position in the US. This lack of support leads to many problems, including overloading and demoralizing teachers, leading to burnout, and the result is our education system losing good teachers. This article is not about taking action to make the appropriate changes that need to be made to shift society’s mindset about public education. Instead, this article is about shifting the mindset of good teachers to help them stay in the classroom until the education system can be fixed.

Multicultural Children's Literacy Collection
It is rather difficult to find suitably diverse books to include in a classroom collection. Many common children’s books are written from a western, Anglo-American point of view. How do we include more diversity into the classroom with this limited variety of resources? How do we encourage more multicultural stories for the future? Like we have talked about in class, providing opportunities for all children to express themselves, tell stories, and facilitate their talents will have a large impact on them as adults in the workforce. When they feel represented in the classroom literature, it shows them that all perspectives are important. Children who are encouraged to read and write freely may feel compelled to write their own books featuring their unique cultural experiences.

My Very First Professional Byline
Once upon a time, in the eighties, my mother decided to go back to school. She had always wanted to study journalism, but, instead, she got married and had ten children. When my father died, my mom had to raise the six youngest children on her own. Not a small task for someone who never had the opportunity to go to college. When my father passed away in 1965, I was barely ten years old, the youngest of the ten kids. As I said, my mother raised up, mostly on her own, and was the best mother in the world —even the neighborhood kids believed it. As life went on and we all grew up, my mother decided to go back to school to get her journalism degree—she was 55 years old! Six months before she graduated, she was hired by the Cleveland Press to work as a staff reporter. After she graduated the Cleveland Press fell on hard times and was swallowed up by the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Although she never did get to work as a reporter, I always have the memory of the poetry she was always writing when I was a child. She had a full album of poetry. And, at least by finishing college, she had the knowledge that she had accomplished what she had set out to do, all those years ago.
