'13 Reasons Why' and the Controversial Theme
Unless you've been living in some remote area with no internet service and only communicating with inanimate objects, then, chances are, you've seen (or, at least heard of) Netflix's recently released title, 13 Reasons Why. The series was adapted from a novel written by Jay Asher but, for now, I'm only going to discuss the Netflix show.

Second Sight: American Beauty
Nowadays, when people talk about American Beauty, it’s largely in terms of how overpraised it was despite being superficial and facile and full of it and how lame (sorry for the ableist language) that Wes Bentley plastic bag bit was, and so on. So, some of the yunguns in the audience might be wondering, who WERE these yoyos who thought the movie was so great?

Nightmare on Elm Street Documentary Screams for Recognition of Gay Rights Struggle
To Roman Chimienti, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge thoroughly awoke his nascent horror movies undertone. So while the second installment slashed the shallow plot lines of the genre (and siblings such as Jason Voorhees and Michael Meyers), this Freddy Krueger's depth had a lot to do with the film's real shock value. But there were still far more laying beneath - and only one thoroughly invested demographic picked up on the subversive gay rights subtext.

American Graffiti and the California Strip – What a Coming of Age Vision
When I first saw American Graffiti back in high school, it stood a very short generation removed from me in 1981 and seemed entirely plausible to its 1962 coming of age setting. But watching it last night on my DVD, I couldn’t help but wondering if the so called California Strip actually existed and served as the focal point for this generation in search of itself.

Mr. Lucky
Some people go through life without the slightest bit of luck. Stuck in dead end jobs, or marry the wrong one. It has been said that all too often a certain amount of luck happens to, you guessed it, certain people. But what is being lucky all about? Can people change their luck or can they create circumstances where one is more prone to success than the other just by chance? Or is it just plain dumb luck that happens to some not only periodically but practically every day? Webster defines luck or chance, as it is sometimes associated with luck, as an event which occurs beyond one's control, without regard to one's will, intention, or desired result. It can be said your are a lucky person if you walk into a Las Vegas casino where at the poker table your first hand is a Royal Flush with a pot that is beyond imagination. Then, again one might be considered lucky if you got to kiss the girl of your dreams and live happily ever after. It is also the chance happening of fortunate or adverse events; fortune: They met one day out of pure luck. Good fortune or prosperity; success: We wish you luck all are connotations associated with being lucky.

Beans, Bindle's, and Beatings: A Review of Rock Candy Mountain #1
“FILTHY FUCKING HOBOS!” That sentence above is the opening line in Rock Candy Mountain, written and drawn by Kyle Starks (of Sexcastle and the Rick and Morty comic on ONI press). Not only is that the first sentence, but it is being by screamed by Satan himself in the year 1948, as he punches through the heads of classic looking hobos. If that's not an amazing way to start a series off, then I no longer know what amazing means. That's only a taste of what Rock Candy Mountain has to offer the readers. Sadly, we only get a few pages of Satan before the focus shifts over to the man The Devil is looking for, the mysterious Jackson, who is searching for the infamous “Rock Candy Mountain” of folk song lore. Jackson is riding the rails when he comes across another, albeit vastly different wayward soul (who we come to know as Pomona) and helps him out of a bind, and then the two have to face down the hobo mafia.
