What Was the Point of 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi?'
Walking out of the theater into the cold New York night, I found myself repeatedly asking my friends, “Well what was the point?” The Last Jedi was unlike any Star Wars film I had seen before, and for the first time, I wasn’t reminiscing about the space battles, clash of lightsabers, or Chewie’s mighty roar. I was left with a profound sense that what we had just seen was not about these things. It was not about giving me the Star Wars that I had grown accustomed to. This is fine. Star Wars is not the franchise it once was. It is not helmed by a single man with unlimited power. After seeing The Force Awakens, my view of the great saga had shifted to fit the new message that Disney, not J.J. Abrams or Lawrence Kasdan, was sending me. Star Wars has joined their dark side. From now on, fan service will play a large role in the saga. This was refuted when I saw Rogue One, and again upon hearing the next Star Wars story would be following Han, and the next Obi-Wan. To be fair, I really adored TFA and have watched it numerous times. While it was not a brave film, it was clean. It had so much riding on it. While it will never compare to its several-decades-old predecessors, it will always be an enjoyable ride. But I was left disappointed, feeling that this trilogy was going to feel all too familiar. As it turns out, I was wrong.

Looking back on it now, I realize you weren't worth it. I have seen scarier monsters, braved worse storms, I have even dragged my legs through bloodier thorns. Nothing compared to the hurt I felt when you told me what you did. How does somebody cheat on someone they claim to love? How does somebody deny and ignore and shut out someone fighting for them tooth and nail? I'm anxious to know, is it because you were hurting too?

I’m sure, at one point or another, we’ve all experienced the guilty sensation we get from not really liking someone even though they’re nice. If you’re someone like me (until very recently), you might not know what to do in these situations. I’ll admit, I’ve carried on week-long conversations, I’ve gone on dates, and I’ve even kissed someone because I felt bad rejecting the person because he was nice. I know more than a few women who’ve gone so far as sleeping with someone because they didn’t really see a way out of it without offending the guy and they didn’t want to do that because he was nice.

What I Learned in My Gap Year
College has always been a rocky boat for me, especially leading up to my high school graduation. One minute I wanted to go, the next I didn’t. Looking back I always subconsciously knew that I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t really ready to give myself the huge responsibility that is college. I finally decided (very last minute) that I would take a year off to work. I would save up money and put it all towards my future education. Little did I know that my decision to take a year would affect everyone I knew, because everyone decided to give me their opinions on my life!!! (Notice my angry sarcasm?) Some family supported my decision fully; they said that college isn't for everyone and you can't force it. Some even tried to convince me that I shouldn't go at all. Other family looked at me like I killed someone. They told me that I was making a huge mistake. It was a wild couple of months, especially when the holidays came around. All I dealt with that year was people telling me what was right for me. Trust me, none of them knew what was right for me. Only I knew what was right for me. First thing I learned: You can't listen to anyone else but yourself. You live for you.

I, too, was in the shoes of those who did not understand the acceptable public maneuvers for when a service dog and their handler were on the scene. We’ve all been there, making kissy noises, staring, petting… innocently enough we did not know the true rudeness, awkwardness, and inconvenience we imposed on the handler. Parents all around the world stay at home to take care of their children. Whether it's a decision made by both parents or just as a result of wanting to be home with the kids. Stay at home parents don't get the credit they should from most people. Staying home to raise a family is hard. It's a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week job. I say job because...it definitely is a job. You are on a round-the-clock schedule; wake up, make sure the kids eat, clean, dishes, play and bonding time, clean, lunch, clean, educational time, make sure kids don't have tantrums over silly things, make sure they are safe, dinner, clean, baths, clean, get them to bed and clean some more. We do it every day. All day. It's a repeating cycle that continues even after they are in school. Raising tiny humans is hard. You put them first, above all else.
