Syrian Government Forces Clash with Rebels in Aleppo After Years of Calm

"Renewed Clashes in Aleppo: Syrian Forces Face Rebel Offensive After Years of Quiet"

By JayuPublished about a year ago 3 min read

For the first time since 2016, intense fighting has erupted in Syria’s largest city, Aleppo, as government troops confront a sudden and powerful offensive by rebel forces. According to Syrian state media, government forces and warplanes are battling to push back insurgents who breached the city’s western defenses on Friday.

A Sudden Offensive

The attack marks a significant shift in the Syrian conflict, as Aleppo had been relatively quiet since opposition forces were expelled from its eastern neighborhoods in 2016. Rebel groups launched their surprise offensive earlier this week, advancing rapidly through parts of Aleppo and Idlib countryside. Along the way, they captured dozens of towns and villages, including a strategically important location south of Aleppo.

Residents in Aleppo reported the sounds of clashes and heavy gunfire, prompting many to flee their homes. Schools and government offices were closed on Saturday, with streets largely empty as people sought safety indoors. Despite the tense situation, some essential services, such as bakeries, remained operational, according to local reports.

Airstrikes and Casualties

To counter the offensive, Syrian warplanes targeted rebel supply routes on Aleppo’s outskirts. The pro-government Al-Watan newspaper shared a video showing a missile striking a gathering of fighters and vehicles. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a group monitoring the conflict, confirmed that airstrikes killed 20 fighters and disrupted reinforcements for the insurgents.

Meanwhile, Russia, a key ally of the Syrian government, has also joined the fight. Russian Defense Ministry officials stated that their warplanes carried out strikes on rebel positions on Friday, reportedly killing 200 militants.

Rebels Inside Aleppo

The rebels not only pushed into Aleppo’s outskirts but also infiltrated parts of the city itself. According to state media, “terrorists” and sleeper cells entered neighborhoods and posed for pictures near iconic landmarks, including Aleppo’s historic citadel. Videos circulated online show insurgents walking through streets and interacting with residents, attempting to reassure them that no harm would come to civilians.

Government forces, however, have been working to expel these insurgents. Reports indicate that some fighters were arrested during clashes.

Regional and International Implications

The renewed violence highlights the complex dynamics of Syria’s ongoing civil war, now in its 13th year. The Syrian government has accused Turkey of supporting the rebel offensive. Turkey has historically backed opposition factions but had been part of a 2019 agreement with Russia and Iran aimed at freezing the frontlines of the conflict.

The offensive also comes at a time when Iran-linked groups, such as Hezbollah, are preoccupied with other conflicts. Hezbollah, which has supported Syrian government forces since 2015, recently ended a two-month war with Israel under a ceasefire agreement. This development may have left the Syrian government more vulnerable to attacks.

Israel, meanwhile, has escalated its strikes on Hezbollah and Iranian targets in Syria over the past two months, adding another layer of tension to the region.

A Flashback to the 2016 Aleppo Battle

The current fighting in Aleppo brings back memories of the city’s devastating battle in 2016, a pivotal moment in the Syrian war. Backed by Russia and Iran, Syrian government forces reclaimed eastern Aleppo after a prolonged siege and heavy bombardment. That victory was a turning point, consolidating President Bashar Assad’s control over key parts of the country.

This week’s sudden offensive by rebel forces underscores the ongoing fragility of Syria’s situation. The conflict, which began in 2011 as peaceful protests against Assad’s rule, has spiraled into a complex war involving numerous domestic and international players.

Moving Forward

As clashes continue, Aleppo’s residents face yet another wave of uncertainty and violence. The Syrian government, with support from Russia, is working to regain control, but the sudden surge in rebel activity highlights the persistent instability in the region.

The coming days will determine whether the Syrian government can repel this offensive and restore order to Aleppo or if this marks the beginning of a new and more intense phase of the conflict. For now, the people of Aleppo are left to endure the chaos and hope for peace in a war that shows no signs of ending.
