Reason First: Mother of Georgia nurse kept alive to deliver unborn baby talks to ‘Nightline’
April Newkirk says "we didn’t have a choice," after brain-dead pregnant daughter Adriana Smith was kept on life support to deliver her baby.

The sad case of Adriana Smith reverberates throughout the nation and globe. Declared brain dead, she delivered her baby at one pound and thirteen ounces.
She had no recourse as to best show her decision due to her condition. Her mother, April Newkirk has been distraught ever since her Smith experienced severe headaches.
When events started to spiral, she stepped into action and did whatever she could for Adriana. Sadly, little could be done.
As Smith lay in her vegetative state, she had no say in how she wanted to either have her baby or not. Newkirk continued to fight on behalf of her daughter, despite the Georgia LIFE law which forces women even in Smith’s case to deliver a baby with a heartbeat.
This only complicates matters as the government should play no role in determining what a woman’s body produces. Even as someone who had lost all consciousness, her rights still remained with her despite her condition.
As the time continued, baby Chance had been born with many hurdles ahead of him in life. He has increased risk for cerebral palsy, ear infections, lung defects and other ailments.
To coerce someone into giving birth without even the slightest knowledge of that birth is reprehensible.
Now at six months old, Newkirk is still caring for her grandson. It is not certain when he will leave the hospital. In the meantime, Newkirk is busy getting the word out about her daughter’s former predicament and the hope of Chance being healthy.

Various doctors have noted this action to deliver Chance had been extremely risky. Only nineteen weeks into pregnancy and no one thought to see if this would work well?
This a damning indictment into the world of medical care on the laws that bind it.
Since Roe v. Wade had been overturned, the ruling gave rise to the notion of the State taking over the lives of mothers to be.
This is the viciousness that exists in the current climate of medical professionals. Their hands remain tied as they don’t have the power to supersede the laws.
For families like Newkirk and Smith, they have no choice in what they can do. They must endure the onslaught of legislation rather than hone in on the nature of healing.
With so many rules and regulations and controls afoot, it is difficult to determine whether or not the system will be approving of the ideals of the individual.
At one time, the medical staff didn’t even consider Smith to be the patient. They noted the baby as the sole figure in the picture.
This clear lack of regard while Smith was still alive only serves the insidious nature of the abortion laws.
Newkirk is powering through the pain by sitting down with journalists and allowing this story to breathe. It is a vital piece of information that ought to be shared with everyone.
A case like this is so rare that it has occurred less than fifty times on record worldwide. Only two of the babies actually survived.
For this tale not to be told would be a grave injustice to everyone going through something like this. It is a stinging reminder of the overreach of government into the lives of individuals.
When Newkirk talks about her daughter’s tragic journey, she is bringing life back into her through words. Though she cannot physically return her to the land of the living, she holds the notion that Chance will one day be healthy and help tell the story, too.
It’s only right that she addresses the pain, the power, and the knowledge of what she experienced.
