A Normal Morning Turned Into Panic

On the morning of July 10, 2025, people across Delhi-NCR felt the ground move beneath them. It was not just their imagination. A real earthquake had struck. At exactly 9:04 AM, tremors were felt in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and even as far as Meerut.

The earthquake measured 4.4 on the Richter scale. That means it was a moderate earthquake — not strong enough to destroy buildings, but definitely enough to shake people’s nerves.

Where Was the Earthquake Center?

The epicenter of the earthquake was near Jhajjar, a district in Haryana, just a short distance from Delhi. It happened 10 kilometers below the ground, which makes it a shallow earthquake.

Shallow earthquakes are usually felt more strongly than deeper ones, even if the magnitude is not very high.

No Major Damage, But Still a Big Wake-Up Call

Thankfully, no injuries or major building damage have been reported. People were scared, but safe. Most left their homes and offices quickly, following safety instructions. Some ran into the streets, while others stayed under desks or doorways.

The National Centre for Seismology and local authorities quickly confirmed the details and said there was no need to panic. But they also reminded everyone that Delhi lies in a high-risk earthquake zone — Seismic Zone IV.

This means earthquakes like this can happen again — and might be stronger next time.

Flood Outside, Earthquake Inside

Adding to the fear, Delhi and nearby areas were already facing heavy rain and flooding due to the monsoon. Roads were waterlogged, traffic was slow, and people were already dealing with stress.

When the earthquake hit, social media was full of messages like:

“Flood outside, earthquake inside – where do we go?”

“Nature is reminding us who’s the real boss.”

While these jokes brought a smile, they also showed how unprepared many of us are.

What Should We Learn From This?

This earthquake is a warning, not a disaster. And we must learn from it.

Here are some important safety tips everyone in Delhi-NCR should follow:

1. Know Your Building

Ask your builder or society if the building follows earthquake-safe design. Many buildings in Delhi are old or poorly constructed.

2. Have an Emergency Kit

Keep a small bag ready with:

Torch

Water bottle

First aid

Important papers

Some food

3. Practice Drills

Teach your children and family what to do:

Drop, Cover, and Hold On

Stay away from windows

Do not use lifts

Go to an open area after the shaking stops

4. Stay Informed

Follow government alerts, and check the National Centre for Seismology or news apps for updates.

What I Felt

As someone living in Delhi, I also felt the tremors. My bed shook slightly, and I first thought it was just a truck passing by. But then my windows started to rattle, and I saw my hanging lights move.

I quickly remembered the “drop and cover” drill and stayed under my desk. After a few seconds, it stopped.

That small moment made me realize how unprepared I was. I don’t have an emergency kit, and my family didn’t know what to do. We’ve decided to change that today.

Final Thoughts

Delhi’s earthquake on July 10 didn’t cause destruction, but it gave us a chance to prepare. Earthquakes can come without warning. We don’t need to live in fear, but we must stay ready.

Let’s not wait for a bigger shock to start caring about safety.

Are you prepared for the next one?
