Donald Trump's Legacy and What It Means For Future Presidents

This week, Donald Trump became the first president in American history to be impeached twice but, what will the annals of history say of Trump?

After four tumultuous years, Donald J. Trump's presidency is coming to an end, and a brand new administration will begin on January 20th. President Trump has often claimed that history would be on his side as a great president and that the Democrats have been leading what he calls "the greatest witch hunt in the history of politics." But will history be on his side?

We live in modern times where the internet acts like a great encyclopedia that harbors knowledge about important historical events, facts, and evidence. But most importantly, it keeps records as time goes by. The entirety of Donald Trump's presidency has been embedded in it. A presidency plagued by scandals, two impeachments, and a failed insurrection on the US Capitol. Unfortunately, any accomplishments that the 45th president of the United States may have achieved will fall into obscurity. What happened last week was the final nail on the coffin of the Trump presidency.

Republicans are scrambling to get rid of Trump's grip on the party. Democrats are begging colleagues to hold the President accountable for the treasonous actions committed by pro-Trump supporters last week, actions President Trump says he's doesn't believe he is responsible for. The thing about presidents and being a politician is that words have power. It's not just what the President said; it's what his supporters interpreted and understood. Words like combat, strength, and "fight like hell" are incendiary and robust words that hold power. These words will forever be ingrained in our history's memory. Whether he meant to incite a riot or not, his words were ardently felt by his supporters, fueling their motives to storm our great pillar of democracy, the US Capitol.

The 45th President of the United States has managed to push the Executive Branch's boundaries and the constitution to the fullest extent, a man who has little regard for democracy and has utterly disrespected the President of the United States' position. History will remember his actions and the actions or the lack thereof by Republican leaders that have enabled his erratic behavior. A president is the leader of their country and the face of their political party. In the 80s, the Republican Party was dubbed "the party of Ronald Reagan." In the late 2000s, Obama became the poster child of the Democratic Party. What Hurricane Trump leaves in its wake is a long-lasting, badly damaged Republican party. Republicans need to question themselves now just what kind of party they will be moving forward.

I wholeheartedly agree that we must heal from this and come together as a nation. However, I can't entirely agree with Republicans that Trump's second impeachment will divide us more. We already are. How more divided can you be? When you break your arm, you don't simply ignore it. You go to the doctor; the doctor will analyze your broken arm, they'll decide that you'll get into surgery to fix it, and then the doctor will put your arm in a cast so that it may heal. The healing in your arm might take a while, but as soon as it's healed, you'll be able to use it again, and you'll probably have a big scar on your arm. Let's think of America right now as the broken arm. We cannot ignore the pain that Trump has caused in our country. We must mend the broken arm so that it may heal. We must repair America by making an example of the President with impeachment. Of course, nothing will ever be the same for our country, but we're on the right track to healing. Donald Trump will be one more scar on America's history.

The story of Donald Trump's presidency is a cautionary tale to future presidents and politicians; An example of how not to be President. Everything that you say and how you carry yourself matters. Every wrong or right decision made has a lasting consequence. Presidents and politicians affect lives—ordinary lives like mine or yours, dear reader. So when someone tells you that they don't vote because their vote won't affect change, let them know that it does and to reflect on these times. Presidents and Politicians are public servants; They work for us, not the other way around.

Donald Trump might think that he will leave the White House without repercussions, but he will not. Because, remember, dear reader, if no citizen is allowed to be above the law, then no President is.
