Chinese Fighter Jets Soar Over Egypt in First Joint Exercises

In a significant move signaling deepening military cooperation Chinese fighter jets took to the skies over Egypt for the first time as part of joint aerial exercises between the two nations. The drills which commenced in early May 2025 mark a milestone in Sino Egyptian relations and reflect China’s growing strategic presence in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The exercise dubbed Sky Guardians-2025 involves China's J-10C multirole fighter jets and Egypt's Rafale and F-16 aircraft. Conducted at an undisclosed air base in Egypt’s western desert the joint maneuvers include air to air combat simulations, joint strike missions aerial refueling and electronic warfare scenarios. According to military analysts the operation is designed not only to boost interoperability between the two air forces but also to send a clear geopolitical message. This historic exercise reflects the warming ties between Beijing and Cairo. Egypt historically aligned with the West and reliant on American and European military hardware has diversified its international partnerships in recent years. As part of its Look East policy Cairo has sought closer ties with China Russia and other non Western powers. Chinese defense ministry spokesperson Senior Colonel Wu Qian stated The joint exercises with Egypt are a symbol of mutual trust and strategic cooperation. They aim to enhance combat readiness share tactical expertise and promote regional stability. Egyptian officials echoed similar sentiments emphasizing that the cooperation is in line with Egypt’s sovereign right to diversify its military alliances.

China’s Expanding Military Footprint

This is the first time Chinese warplanes have been deployed to North Africa for military exercises. The People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) continues to expand its global footprint engaging in joint exercises across Central Asia Africa and even Europe. Analysts note that China’s interest in Egypt goes beyond bilateral relations; it reflects Beijing’s broader ambitions under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in which Egypt is a critical partner. China has already invested heavily in Egyptian infrastructure including the Suez Canal Economic Zone and Cairo’s new administrative capital. The addition of military cooperation gives China another lever of influence in a region traditionally dominated by the United States. While officials from both countries insist the exercise is not aimed at any third party the timing and symbolism have raised eyebrows internationally. With growing tensions between China and the United States many experts see this as part of Beijing's effort to challenge American military dominance worldwide. Dr. Marcus Ahlstrom a military analyst based in Brussels commented The Chinese presence in Egypt is not just about improving tactics it’s about establishing symbolic and strategic parity with the West. If China can operate comfortably in the airspace of key Middle Eastern allies it sends a message about the new multipolar world order. Regional reactions to the exercise have been mixed. Some Arab nations have welcomed the move viewing it as an opportunity for new alliances and diversification of military support. Others particularly those aligned closely with the U.S are watching with caution. Israel and Gulf states have reportedly monitored the drills via satellite intelligence though no official comment has been made. The United States a long time military ally of Egypt and provider of billions in military aid since the Camp David Accords has remained diplomatically quiet on the matter. However several U.S think tanks have published reports suggesting concern over Egypt's deepening ties with China especially in areas of sensitive military technology and cybersecurity. The Sky Guardians 2025 drills may just be the beginning of a new era in China MENA defense relations. Both Chinese and Egyptian military officials hinted at making these exercises a regular occurrence possibly expanding them to include naval and ground forces in the future. Some reports suggest that China may be exploring long term military access agreements in the region including limited use of airfields and naval ports. The Chinese fighter jets soaring over Egypt symbolize more than just military cooperation they represent a shifting geopolitical landscape. As China deepens its ties with non Western allies nations like Egypt are increasingly becoming battlegrounds for influence not through war but through partnerships investments and joint exercises in the skies.
