Potato Shoes

I am writing this article not because I have any potato shoes. I saw a segment on Good Morning America this morning and found the information interesting.

I asked family members and friends if they had heard of potato shoes, but they had not. I am writing this article for those who are unfamiliar with the trend.

Fashion has seen its share of strange trends: plastic jeans, mushroom leather, and even bread-shaped purses. But 2025 has delivered something no one saw coming: potato shoes. Yes, actual potato-inspired footwear has taken social media by storm, and people everywhere are trying to get a pair, make a pair, or at least take a picture pretending to wear a pair.

About Potato Shoes

The best way I can describe the shoes is that they resemble Mr. Potato Head. That's how they got their name. Besides, they look like a russet potato.

Potato shoes are exactly what they sound like. It is footwear that looks as if someone carved a pair of clogs out of giant russet potatoes.

Designers are crafting them out of:

  • Lightweight foam shaped like oversized baked potatoes
  • Soft rubber molded to look like baked potatoes
  • Resin with speckled “skin” textures
  • 3D-printed material engineered to resemble potato lumps, eyes, and all
  • The style is intentionally ugly-cute, echoing trends like Crocs, foam runners, and cartoon shoes.
  • The shoes provide comfort and support, making them ideal for casual outings or lounging at home.

Potato shoes are cozy and comfortable. They come in various styles, including slip-ons and clogs, and are available in a range of colors and patterns, catering to a wide range of consumers who want both style and ease.

How the Trend Started

The potato shoe trend didn’t come from a major designer or fashion house. Instead, a small independent creator posted a parody video showing off a pair of potato-shaped clogs as a joke. The video exploded across social media platforms, especially TikTok, where it gained popularity.

The more people joked about potato shoes, the more others wanted a pair. Influencers began filming unboxing videos. Comedians wore them in skits. Even fashion bloggers, known for their polished style, couldn’t resist trying them on for the laughs.

Once the trend hit Instagram and Reddit, the potato shoes became a conversation piece. The potato shoe that started out as a joke is now taking the internet by storm. Within hours of posting, the video went viral. Bigger influencers joined in, posting photos of themselves stomping around in what looked like giant spuds.

Who’s Wearing Them?

  • High-fashion risk-takers
  • Teenagers looking for viral content
  • Comedians, dancers, and even a few surprised celebrities
  • Some are wearing them for laughs, others for comfort, and a few simply because they love owning the next weird thing.

Why People Love the Potato Shoe Trend

Those who have a pair of potato shoes describe them as:

  • Soft oversized slip-on shoes designed to resemble the inside of a baked potato
  • Extremely comfortable
  • Lightweight
  • Uniquely expressive
  • A conversation starter anywhere they go

Whether the potato shoe becomes a long-term fashion staple or just a quirky moment in footwear history, it has definitely made its mark.

How Much Do Potato Shoes Cost?

The potato show started as a joke. The price range from $35 to $425. Some people are making their own with limited materials, such as craft foam, brown paint, and hot glue.

  • Target: Brooke Clog – Universal Thread - $35
  • Amazon: Stelle Clogs (Arch Support) - $37.99
  • UGG: Classic Micro Boot - $140
  • Zappos: Boston Soft Footbed – Suede - $169.95
  • Bloomingdale’s: Veronica Beard Fenix Shearling Clog - $425
