The Rise of an Italian Fashion Icon: Giorgio Armani's Journey

Redefining Men's Style

By Adrian Noval Plaja "Artixia"Published 3 years ago 6 min read

Today we celebrate the 89th birthday of the legendary Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, who founded his eponymous brand, "Giorgio Armani," in 1975. Armani's clean lines and understated elegance struck a chord with consumers and helped build his vast lifestyle empire—a lifestyle that reflects the sobriety and elegance through the timeless charm of Italian fashion. He launched his Armani Jeans and Armani Exchange lines in the 1990s, followed by a range of home designs.

Armani's distinctive style is characterized by simplicity, sophistication, and timelessness. He prefers neutral tones, fluid silhouettes, and tailored cuts that enhance the natural form of the wearer. His minimalist aesthetic revolutionized the way men and women dress, banishing overly fussy details and excessive ornamentation. Armani's understated yet luxurious designs have been worn by some of the world's most influential figures, from politicians to Hollywood stars.

It is impossible to talk about Giorgio Armani without knowing about his beginnings and life. He was born on July 11, 1934, in the city of Piacenza, in northern Italy, near Milan, where he grew up with his family. His fascination with the human body led him to take an interest in medicine, studying for three years at the University of Milan. As the 1950s came to an end, Giorgio began to immerse himself in the world of fashion. He left university to work as a photography assistant at "La Rinascente," the most important clothing and accessories store in the city at that time. In 1964, Nino Cerruti entrusted him with the selection of fabrics for his collection designs, and he began working with him. In this way, Armani learned all the phases of the designer's craft: fabric selection, cutting, tailoring, and marketing. This experience solidified his personal style as an independent designer in prestigious companies. Thus, he introduced elements of foreign cultures into the Milanese universe and Italian consumers.

In 1975, together with his friend and business partner Sergio Galeotti, he decided to create his own brand, and they founded the company Giorgio Armani. They opened a store in Milan, from where they launched a ready-to-wear line for men and women. In July of the same year, they presented the first men's collection under their own name, followed by the women's collection three months later, always introducing innovations in different styles. From the beginning, Armani brought the sobriety and lines of men's clothing into the female silhouette, to the history of fashion. He also employed materials in unusual contexts and surprising combinations. Most notably, in the 1980s, Giorgio Armani imposed a hermaphroditic style that emphasized comfort, functionality, and freedom. From there on, his aggressive marketing and commercialization methods made it possible, among other things, for his designs to be introduced into the Hollywood film industry. Classic, minimalist, sexy, elegant, and simple are the adjectives that best define his style, a style that has brought him international recognition and made the Armani empire one of the most important in the world.

History: Giorgio Armani and Sergio Galeotti founded the company in Milan in 1975 with a capital of $10,000. Today, Armani employs around 4,700 employees and has 13 factories around the world. It has approximately 300 stores in 36 countries. Recently, the house has been operating a haute couture line, showcased in Paris during Haute Couture Fashion Week, under the name Armani Privé. Unlike much of the fashion industry, which is dominated by massive multinational corporations, such as LVMH, and relies heavily on licensing, Armani remains privately owned by Giorgio Armani and produces the vast majority of its products in-house.

Lines:

Armani Casa: Armani Casa is home to the high-end collection by Armani and is characterized by selling furniture, lamps, bedding, and dining sets. Although the prices are generally very high, for example, the highly acclaimed Tchaikovsky Armchair is sold for $9,985. Armani Casa is available in its 40 stores worldwide and select Neiman Marcus stores.

Armani Collezioni: Armani Collezioni is a high-end line by fashion designer Giorgio Armani. The line is more expensive than the Armani Exchange, Armani Jeans, and Emporio Armani lines but less expensive than the high-end ready-to-wear line, Giorgio Armani (sometimes referred to as Armani), and the haute couture line, Armani Privé. The line is typically aimed at an older clientele who don't want the "trendy design" but emphasizes classic themes of high quality, replacing the Giorgio Armani Le Collezioni line. In addition to being in independent boutiques (characterized by the exclusive Collezioni line), they are also located in luxury department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, David Jones, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, and Neiman Marcus.

Some of Armani's most famous and influential collections include:

The Emporio Armani line, launched in 1981. This younger and more affordable diffusion line made Armani's style accessible to a wider audience and helped propel his brand to international fame.

The Giorgio Armani Privé haute couture line, launched in 2001. This ultra-luxurious collection features unique designs tailored for Armani's most discerning clientele.

The Armani suit, which popularized the power suit for women in the 1980s. Armani adapted women's suits with softer shoulders, narrower lapels, and a more fitted silhouette that accentuated the female figure.

The Aqua di Gio fragrance for men, launched in 1996. This fresh, citrusy fragrance became an instant classic and remains one of Armani's best-selling fragrances today.

The red carpet dresses designed by Armani for some of Hollywood's biggest stars, including Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, and Penélope Cruz. His glamorous and body-conscious creations helped define red carpet style for decades.

Armani's designs have stood the test of time, resonating with a wide range of individuals who appreciate the elegance and simplicity he brings to fashion. His influence on the industry is undeniable, and his legacy as an iconic fashion designer continues to inspire new generations of designers and fashion enthusiasts alike. Giorgio Armani's impact on the fashion industry goes beyond his innovative designs and successful brand. He has also made significant contributions to the world of film and entertainment. His collaboration with the movie industry began in the 1980s when he started designing costumes for films.

Armani's ability to capture the essence of characters through clothing made him a sought-after designer for filmmakers. His keen eye for detail and understanding of the importance of costume in storytelling allowed him to create memorable looks that complemented the narrative and enhanced the performances of the actors.

One of Armani's most notable collaborations was with director Richard Gere for the film "American Gigolo" in 1980. The sleek and stylish wardrobe Armani designed for Gere's character epitomized the image of a sophisticated and affluent male escort. The film showcased Armani's talent for merging fashion and film seamlessly.

Armani's partnership with the entertainment industry extended beyond costume design. His designs became a staple on the red carpet, dressing countless celebrities for prestigious award ceremonies and premieres. The timeless elegance and impeccable craftsmanship of his creations made them a favourite among Hollywood's elite.

Over the years, Armani has dressed numerous iconic figures, including Michelle Pfeiffer, George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Beyoncé, to name just a few. His ability to capture the essence of each individual and create outfits that perfectly suited their personalities and occasions solidified his status as a go-to designer for celebrities.

Armani's influence also extends to the world of sport. He has designed uniforms for various sports teams, including the English national football team, the Italian Olympic team, and the New York Knicks basketball team. His sports apparel combines functionality, style, and innovation, reflecting his commitment to excellence in all aspects of design.

Beyond the realm of fashion and entertainment, Giorgio Armani has shown a dedication to social and environmental responsibility. He has been an advocate for sustainable practices in the fashion industry and has incorporated eco-friendly materials into his designs. Armani also supports numerous charitable causes, including HIV/AIDS research, education, and disaster relief efforts.

As Giorgio Armani celebrates his 89th birthday, his influence on the fashion industry and popular culture remains as strong as ever. His timeless designs, impeccable tailoring, and attention to detail have solidified his place as an iconic figure in the world of fashion. From red carpets to movie screens, Armani's creations continue to captivate audiences and leave an indelible mark on the industry. His legacy serves as an inspiration for aspiring designers and a testament to the power of passion, innovation, and dedication.
