My Top 5 Youtube Crochet Designers
From beginner to advanced, from blankets to off-the-shoulder jumpers, here are my top youtube crochet designers creating trendy clothes and accessories complete with tutorials from start to finish
I started crochet last March at the start of the pandemic lockdown. After a few youtube tutorials, I finally got the hang of simple stitches and moved onto granny square patterns and eventually a whole cardigan. Let's just say, I was hooked (sorry not sorry).
I've tried projects from many crochet designers from youtube on my journey. There is so much out there. Not just basic jumpers or socks but eye-catching clothing and accessories which make say 'I want to make this!' for every single one, as if you've got infinite yarn and time.
Youtube is perfect for visual learners and beginners compared to follow a written pattern which are limited in language and can be confusing. These are my top 5 channels, which all create helpful videos of their stylish and creative projects from start to finish.
5. MJ's Off The Hook Designs
Great for: Blankets, cardigans, pillowcases, hats, jumpers, household items (honestly, a bit of everything)
Instagram: @mjsoffthehook
Website: https://www.mjsoffthehookdesigns.com/
I adore the variety of projects on this channel created by Michelle Moore from Canada. From a dishcloth to a mermaid blanket(!), it's great for becoming creative with your crochet skills if you're stuck on ideas that are not just jumpers and scarves. If you fancy getting crafty for household gifts, then this channel is the one.
For absolute beginners, she has plenty of tutorials for stitches such as half double crochets and cables.
4. AC Crochets
Great for: Fashionable couture outfits (skirts, dresses, tops, bikinis)
Instagram: @accrochets
This youtube channel is run by the talented Agnes from Kenya, with her earliest uploads only 6 months ago. She mostly focuses on tutorials for specific items of clothing, rather than how to do individual stitches, so more focused on intermediate and advanced crocheters wanting to snazz up their wardrobe.
I love her use of frills, mesh and off-the-shoulder tops. Her growing library of tutorials is definitely one to keep an eye on.
3. Wilma Westenberg
Great for: Triangle shawls, hats and tops
Instagram: @wilmawestenberg
Website (all free patterns!): https://wilmade.com/
Wilma Westenberg is a crochet designer from Holland. I came across her when I wanted to make a lace triangle shawl as one of my first projects, due to their ease and versatility. I instantly fell in love with all her shawl designs which feature creative stitches and gradient coloured yarn. These can brighten up an outfit (I'm personally all about making it look like I've made an effort, when I'm actually super lazy).
Her tutorials are great for advanced beginners, looking to glam up their crochet projects without the need to think about fit and seaming (i.e great for making for someone else!).
2. Crochet with Carrie
Great for: Jumpers, cardigans, vests and tops
Instagram: @hey_carriex
Website (all free patterns!): https://www.crochetwithcarrie.com/
If you live in a cold country, Carrie from Ireland has the crochet projects from you. My most recent project was her cable cardigan seen in the link below, which looks more complicated than it really was.
Her designs on her jumpers and cardigans feature unique stitches and patterns which are nice and repetitive, perfect for your autumn/winter wardrobe. Therefore, I would recommend her designs if you're looking to branch out into your first crochet clothing project. She creates a size small in the videos, but will mention how to alter for larger sizes.
1. TCD DIY
Great for: Jumpers, cardigans, tops, leggings
Instagram: @tcddiy
Website (crochet patterns to buy): https://www.etsy.com/shop/tcddiy
To say I'm in love with this channel is an understatement. TCD uploads new patterns every Wednesday and Sunday, meaning there are always new ones to try. Her variations of jumpers are for all tastes whether it's balloon sleeves, bell sleeves, cables, v-necks or a bit of everything.
This channel definitely takes the top spot because of how useful the youtube tutorials are. Each section of the project (e.g. front panel, back panel, cuffs) are time stamped on the video, which I've seen barely any others do. This makes it much easier to navigate each project, already split up into sections.
Since this channel focuses mainly on creating crochet clothing, rather than slowly going through any beginner stitches, I'd recommend it for intermediate to advanced crocheters. She also creates a size small in the videos, but will mention how to alter for larger sizes.
So there we are! Check out these youtube channels for some fun crochet projects, whatever your skill level whether it's making a new cosy blanket for your sofa or a cardigan for your mum. Happy crocheting! :)
