My SECRET WEAPON at the Thrift Store
Once upon a time, a nuclear reactor broke down. The technicians had worked and worked to repair but finally called in an outside expert. The expert walked around the reactor, focused on a spot and, gave the reactor one swift kick. It started up, whirring and purring like normal. When the bill arrived, the technicians were shocked. It was for $15,000! The Head Tech phoned the expert and demanded an explanation. "All you did was kick it", he exclaimed. Slowly and confidently, the expert responded, "Ah, but you have to know WHERE to kick it!" The bill was paid promptly.

Fashion Statement of A Zebra
Fashion Statement - Contributing Factors Of Life From the time I was young I loved putting my moms black and white checkered trench coat on. Hanging on the ground, looking like I had a train following me, I felt like I was a princess.

When Old Becomes New
There is something so special about walking into a thrift store. It doesn’t matter which one although we all have our favorites, and it doesn’t really matter why you are there. It’s the excitement of what you might find and if you are going to find your next favorite thing!

Thrifting Pro's
How do you write a story about thrift shops without mentioning the song Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. This song was so popular back in 2012 and talks about how Macklemore works at a thrift shop and buys everything from a broken keyboard to a pair of moccasins. He even says that he is hunting in the store looking for the next best thing that he can find because you never know what you will come across in these stores. In the music video you see him Macklemore wearing everything from fur coats to a built-in onesie with socks, riding a scooter, and running across multiple couches all in a line. The video does a great job at showing what goes on at thrift stores.

Thrifting isn’t something I do because it saves money, you can find cool and vintage items. I do it because it’s engraved in my DNA. The thrill of shopping in thrift stores is the search and THEN the find. In today’s society, it’s easy to search the internet and immediately find what you’re looking for. When you thrift and you find not only what you were looking for, you just know it was made for you. It was meant to be, if you will. This has happened to me countless times (not to be confused with every time I go about thrift shopping), and this is about the most recent time.

Magical Pajama Pants
When I saw the best thrift shop purchase challenge, I could not help but look down because still to this day since being a freshman in high school, a little over a decade ago. I went into a thrift store in the DFW area with my mother, which normally means that I get done within five minutes and die of boredom or get in trouble while the neverending story actually starts. This time was different as I felt drawn to the rack in the far right of the store maybe it was the training or predestined fate, but I found the best pajama pants on this side of the galaxy that day. I was swiping like a madwoman on Tinder who gonna show that man what is good until the heavens parted to show me my soon-to-be “uniform” for the next decade. Those pants and I spent the next two and half hours being drug around as my mother and grandmother shopped till they literally made us all drop. Every few minutes after asking if we were close to getting to go eat would be followed by the hoping for the pants. Finally, after eternity and a day I got to go to the register with my precious treasure. Then just when some folks think God is done working miracles those pants became mine for just five dollars.

Thrift-Therapy
My love of thrift shopping started in high school, going hand in hand with my growing passion for fashion and my shrinking bank account. I wasn’t the most extroverted kid in those years, but I like to think most of my personality came through my outfits. The world of fashion was so big, so broad; so many trends and styles and I wanted to try them all, and my part-time job as a dishwasher just wasn’t cutting it. Enter the world of the thrift store: all you need is a little patience, a good podcast to listen to, or your favourite Spotify mix and you’re good to go. Shopping at Value Village quickly became a weekly occurrence, and shortly after the Goodwill and Salvation Army were added to the list. Those stores will always remain close to my heart, being my first real introduction to the thrifting world. My favourite spots, however, became those you had to search a little bit harder for, hidden in the nooks and crannies of almost every city or town. The ones you might come across while walking the dog or recommended by a close friend, the discovery of which became almost as exciting as finding the items themselves.

Jeans, LBD and Wilfred.
If there is a thrift store in town, you can count on seeing me there whenever possible. Goodwill as a child was, to say the least am undesirable place to be. My parents got divorced when my brother and I were young. We stayed with dad through the week, he was the more stable one, on disability so it was an easy choice for my mom and him. What comes with disability is no money. Food Stamps, back when they came in a booklet, they never ripped off on the dotted seam as well as they should have. Along with, Medicare which was free health insurance and dentist visits for me and my brother! I guess looking back it was a good thing we got care, albeit not the best. Lastly, THRIFT STORES. I remember walking in to some and the overwhelming smell of must and tiredness. All things just sitting there untouched for however long it took 8 layers of dust to gather. Goodwill, back then was one of the better ones, if I could possibly put a positive spin on them. Goodwill was organized compared to the local thrift stores. Local was 30 minutes away though! Picking out clothes you were expected to wear to school that looked like they had been played in for years was not my idea of fun. After a while I realized I wasn’t going to get new stuff so if I wanted anything at all I was going to have to muster up the courage and then swallow my pride. Moving the tops one by one while conspicuously looking around in hopes I wouldn’t see someone I know.

To Upcycling And BEYOND!
Once upon a time, a little girl walked through a battered metal archway into a world of possibilities. My first visit to a thrift store was a new kind of thrill. A treasure trove awaited me, filled with items even I could afford on my meagre allowance. For the price of a handful of candy, I could snag a fancy purse or choose my own new clothes. I was enthralled by the magic of that secondhand paradise.

Bunny’s Bargain Basement. Third Place in Thrift Finds Challenge.
In the summer, I’d see her getting into her lipstick-red convertible, all her shiny gold bracelets clanging as she opened the door. Chandelier earrings glimmered out from her jet-black, puffed-up 1960s hairdo. Her big curvaceous body, always clothed in dark baby-doll dresses of pleather and lace, would swing itself into the car, and off she’d go.
