Bring on the 90's
Skinny jeans are apparently out now. We’re headed back to the 90’s with baggy jeans, crop tops, and oversize tees. I wore all of this when I was a teenager. I was especially not a fan of tight jeans when I was younger. Although, I did wear them.

A preponderance of plaid
My parents dressed me in plaid polyester from about the time that I could walk until about the time the flame-retardant pajama laws went into effect – about seven years later. If you were to see early pictures of me, you might be forgiven if you mistook me for a child whose parents when yachting on weekends or played lawn tennis in the early morning. You could be excused if you thought I might be the child of some Scottish or Irish immigrants given the preponderance of plaid in my day-to-day ensembles. I had plaid polyester slacks, leisure suits, and bucket hats. You might have guessed that, from the looks of things, one of my parents must be Herb Tarlek from WKRP in Cincinnati.

Dressing for Happiness If the pandemic has taught me anything about fashion, it’s that we’re constantly chasing that sweet nostalgia of old trends. This past year, I’ve definitely noticed a whirlwind of fads reammerge into mainstream fashion, ranging from rad 70s tie dye, to adorable 90s butterfly hair-clips. And while the revival of past trends is by no means new, I feel like our current craving for nostalgia has been amplified in our desire to reminisce about simpler, pre-pandemic times. People are at home, they're bored and stressed, and they're experimenting with fashion as a way to embrace nostalgia and have some good, simple fun.

One day Catherine de’Medici the queen of France, was having a bad day and decided she didn’t want to see women with “thick” waists at court. She then made an order banishing women from coming to court if they didn’t find a slimming solution. That marked the start of the use of corsets by women in the 19th century. It became wildly popular and became some sort of a uniform and an essential undergarment.

I've Just Been Shot And That Bullet Has Sent Me Back To 1981
It’s an unexplainable wonder. A passion or a love that you don’t understand and can’t fully explain. I didn’t realise how much I loved the fashion of the 80s until I watched the hit TV series sequel to Life on Mars – Ashes to Ashes. Maybe I was an 80s fashionista in my previous life, or maybe I really was just born in the wrong decade, but there is something about the fashion of this underappreciated decade that I feel we could learn from and bring back to our own time. This isn’t just a matter of personal preference, but something I believe could be economically, environmentally and socially beneficial.

Twisting and Twirling
I love clothes, I always have because they have been this huge way for me to express myself when words seem to fail me. The memory that clothes hold can be so beautiful and powerful, they can remind us of better times and people, they bring about feelings and memories that lay within every swish of a skirt and click of a heel. Clothes can be magic, when I was at my sickest, I found a pair of army pants at a thrift shop, I loved them and wore them to every single doctors appointment, I gained strength from the memory and the purpose that was embedded in the very fabric of that fabric. It was my armour; it was my confidence, and it was a sign of the battles that I faced in those offices. My 50s style apple dress with the poodle skirt and paired with kitten heels is the outfit that I wore on my first date with my husband, the dress makes me feel playful and flirty, so utterly feminine in the way that I hold myself when it graces my curves. There were the 90s style clunky heels and clear purse that I pulled out when I took my exam in university because they made me feel edgy and off but in a good way. The overalls that I love to wear to the farmers market that remind me of my teen years that I spent working on the farm. Clothes hold so much memory within them and it is incredible when we take up outfits and pieces of clothing from decades past because it is a signifier not just of where we have been but of where we are and what we as a society hold to be important. The clothes that I wear and the outfits that I choose every day are so important they tell the world my mood, they tell the story that is my life. We live in a time where we can wear whatever we want, we are in a time where outfits and clothing have no rules and where we have access to clothes and styles from centuries past because of places like thrift store and the internet.

Bewitched
One of my favorite shows has always been and will always be Bewitched which ran from 1964-1972. Not only was Elizabeth Montgomery a breath-taking beauty and an amazing actress, but her outfits were out of this world. Every time I watch an episode I want to go shopping for a new wardrobe. A wardrobe that includes elegant coats, cute sweaters, poodle skirts, white gloves, tiny purses and as many dresses from the 50’s and 60’s I can get my hands on. I would have so much clothing, in so many colors if I let myself indulge in such an experience that I would need a second job and an actual closet. I had to buy an armoire from JYSK because my house was built on a farm in 1905 without any.

I Am Ready for the Revival of Modern Subculture in 2021
I was born in 1971 and from early childhood I developed a love for fashion. Having a talented Mum who could sew taught me as a little girl about creativity and the importance of owning my individuality. Looking at old photographs of her in the United Kingdom made me appreciate different styles and patterns. Rummaging through her closet to run my little fingers across the fabric of classic pieces she saved, inspired a sweet nostalgia in me for a decade which although before my time was my earliest inspiration in fashion. The era of Modernist Subculture struck a fancy in me and I am ready for its revival today in 2021.

Flower Children of the Future
I remember the first time I saw a picture of my mother was taken forty years earlier, the year 1978, smiling her beauty queen smile from an old newspaper cutting of the Albany Times. Her curtain bangs and Farrah Fawcett curls, her eyes shining because she just won St. Patrick’s Day queen. I remember thinking how sweet that was, a St. Patrick’s Day queen making the newspaper. She recently sent me a picture from the summer of ‘79, poolside in Corpus Christi clad in a red band tee with a “summer tan courtesy of Coppertone.” These photos were a reminder that she lived an entire life before she was my mom. I appreciate getting a peek at who she was through saved polaroids and fading print photographs.

Bringing Happy Back
It's been a tough year, the Covid pandemic has taken a toll on the world, physically, financially and emotionally. Everytime we turn on the t.v. it seems all we hear is doom and gloom. Bad news, followed by worse news, it's enough to throw anyone into the doldrums. But here's the thing, no one wants to be in the doldrums. How do we get out? I mean, we can't control world events, right? Perhaps, but we can control our own little corner of the universe, and what better way to do that than by putting on something that makes us smile.
