When Silence Becomes Sin: A Prophetic Word for Survivors
May every survivor know that their truth is holy

These are the verses so often used to shame survivors into silence — as if naming abuse were a greater sin than committing it. But Scripture’s intent is the opposite. It warns against those who twist truth for gain, not those who speak it for healing.
Exodus 23:1 — “Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.”
Proverbs 18:8 — “The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.”
Leviticus 19:16 — “Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I am the Lord.”
These verses are often used as weapons against the wounded. Many survivors of abuse are told that speaking about what happened would make them “gossips,” “bitter,” or “unforgiving.” Yet these scriptures were never meant to shame truth-tellers. They are indictments against those who twist words to harm, who conceal wickedness behind pious masks. The warning is not for the brokenhearted who speak truth — it is for the deceivers who distort it.
The Difference Between Gossip and Testimony
Gossip is born of shadow. It feeds on secrecy, drama, and distortion. It seeks to elevate the self by tearing another down. It manipulates perception and destroys trust. The Bible calls such speech “an unrighteous witness” because it aligns with wickedness rather than with light.
Testimony, however, is light itself. It exposes what was hidden so that healing and justice can begin. It is not entertainment — it is exorcism.
Ephesians 5:11 commands: “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” To name what was done in truth and clarity is to obey this divine instruction. Silence in the face of evil is not virtue; it is complicity. When a survivor speaks, heaven bears witness.
The Smear Campaign and the Survivor
Abusers often launch smear campaigns to destroy credibility before truth can surface. They tell half-truths, twist timelines, weaponize charm, and gather sympathizers. Proverbs 18:8 foresaw this ancient tactic: “The words of a talebearer are as wounds.” Those lies travel deep, infecting families, churches, and communities until even the innocent doubt their own sanity.
The survivor’s voice arises from the opposite impulse — not to destroy, but to restore. To say “This happened, and it was wrong” is not vengeance; it is spiritual alignment with God’s justice. Psalm 94:16 asks, “Who will rise up for me against the evildoers?” When no one else stands, the wounded become their own prophets. They rise, trembling perhaps, but radiant with divine truth. Their courage becomes the trumpet through which God exposes the deeds done in darkness.
When Silence Becomes Sin
Silence is not always peace. Sometimes it is the soil where corruption grows. Luke 12:2–3 declares, “There is nothing covered that shall not be revealed.” To participate in revelation is to cooperate with God’s own nature — Truth Itself. Survivors who speak are co-labouring with that sacred unveiling. Their words carry the fire of justice, burning through illusion and denial.
Speaking truth does not require hatred — it requires holiness. It does not require revenge — it requires remembering. The survivor’s story, told in love and accuracy, becomes a bridge for others still trapped in shame and confusion. Their words say: “You are not alone. You are not crazy. You are not to blame.”
A Word to the Wounded
If you wrestle with the moral weight of telling your story, remember this:
You are not gossiping — you are testifying.
You are not breaking a commandment — you are fulfilling one.
You are not dishonoring God — you are revealing the God who sets captives free.
Tell your story with dignity. Tell it with accuracy. Tell it as a sacred act of reclamation. You are not seeking to destroy a person; you are seeking to destroy the lie.
Your voice is not a weapon — it is a lantern. It shines through the ruins, guiding others home. Every truth spoken in love becomes a spark in the greater resurrection. For in the kingdom of God, silence in the face of evil is sin, but truth is worship.
