'13 Reasons Why': Opinions from a Mental Illness Sufferer
Okay, so I want to talk about 13 Reasons Why. If you have been hibernating in a cave since 2017 (tempting sometimes, I know), it is a Netflix original series centered around a young high school girl named Hannah Baker. She commits suicide and leaves behind a series of tapes explaining the events that led to this decision and inevitably, how many people failed to help her. Each tape focuses around people within Hannah’s life and how their actions contributed to this tragic event.

Glorification or Education?
13 Reasons Why is a show about a girl named Hannah Baker. The first season is about why Hannah killed herself, while the second season is about getting justice for Hannah as her family and friends go to court against the school. 13 Reasons Why has had a lot of controversial scenes, like Hannah's suicide. Some people think these scenes are glorifying bad things, others think they are educating us about hard situations that really can—and do—happen.

The story follows the aftermath of a young girl's suicide and the aftereffects on the school, community, and the people left behind. After her death, Hannah Baker leaves behind tapes with thirteen reasons why she killed herself and instructions stating that the tapes must be heard by the people that are on them.

Reasons Why Not....
13 Reasons Why has taken over the internet. The teenage population has fallen in love with the series and the characters. They want their friends to watch it, they think it's an awareness of suicide and bullying, but honestly there are so many things wrong with this show and there are so many reasons why I won't watch it. I understand as this show takes over the internet, my opinion seems to be pretty rare and confusing to the outside world, so I'd like to give a little intel into what problems I see with this show. Granted my opinions are based on trailers and the reviews of others and I have not seen the show yet, but bare with me.

13 Reasons to Stay Alive
I have a lot of feelings about the new Netflix show, 13 Reasons Why. As a middle schooler, I read the novel by Jay Asher and fell in love with it. Hannah was likeable, a little dramatic, but relatable as a 13 year old who thought middle school was hard. I never gave too much thought to the plot but ravaged through the book in about a couple of hours and decided that I liked it, but never dove too deep into the heavy subjects brought up. I was fortunate to have never experienced super similar things to what Hannah went through in the book and had not yet felt the same things she was feeling.
