The Sad Girl Saga
The Sad Girl Saga is an essay collection exploring different facets of trauma and mental illness throughout my life. I started writing personal essays on accident in my creative writing class in 2018. The first line of my very first essay Almost Girl popped into my head and then I just wrote it all in one sitting. That essay has had many evolutions from it's first form but the original version is what brought me into the world of personal essay. My creative writing class was supposed to be only fiction but at the time I didn't even really know that personal essays were a genre so I shared the essay anyway. I think a lot of my classmates assumed it was fiction. My teacher definitely did. I was published that year in Central Michigan's student magazine and I won the fiction award. Taking the cover off of a personal essay and admitting it's not fiction is a strange and vulnerable feeling. But once I wrote that first one I couldn't stop writing more of them. Please be aware that these essays contain trigger warnings for sexual assault, trauma, abuse, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and child abuse. But thank you for letting me share these pieces of my life with you!
