Ready for Peace?

The 4 Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

By Heather FieldsPublished 6 years ago 2 min read
All lessons and quotes are from this book, I take no credit for them. This is my opinion.

Starting off, this book will change your life, for a positive, loving turn. I am a PTSD warrior and applying everything I have learned, has tremendously changed my life.

A friend and I were conversing one day, years ago, of how my life had ended up where it had and all of the confusion I was dealing with, the shame and guilt and the fact I was having to remove more people from my life than invite them in. I was lonely, plain and simple, and I was tired of feeling like the problem. So, my friend, whom we'll call Maggie, explained a great deal about how these life lessons were applied to her life and she had been on a calm since doing so. When you were at the time I was at, which we've all been to at some point, if not multiple occasions. I took Maggie's advice and read this online after much searching- later rented via library. I have read this several times now, still applying and refreshing the life lessons.

We begin with the backstory of the authors, whom are very into the Toltec culture and religious background. This is more of a self-assurance healing than paranormal- just to specify. We hear their cultures, traditions and how the book came about. I, personally, love hearing the histories of families, especially outside of my bloodline; these are also very spiritual cultures and handle things with the full mindset of personal responsibility.

The main rules are The Four Agreements;

  • Be impeccable with your word.
  • Don't take anything personally.
  • Don't make assumptions.
  • Always do your best.

Simple, efficient, doable.

It also illustrates scenarios, reactions and possible thoughts that can cause blockage of illustrating the self peace you deserve to have. It has personally helped me through some anxiety and panic I deal with, and I certainly would vouch for anyone just wanting a more peaceful lifestyle!

These are also lessons we can positively spread throughout our world. A simple hello, a kind smile, a friendly greeting while holding the door- it shows the reaction of your behavior and how it affects everyone around you. It gives new light on seeing the good in the bad, and accepting things as they are. As I read this novel, I changed more than my impatient behavior and nonsensical stress, I motivated my brain into being happier and being able to grapple my bad days better than I have ever been able.

It has a sequel, The Fifth Agreement, which I have not yet been able to read fully.
