It is a persistent chronic disorder in a person’s behavior, style, thinking and feelings that leads to the emergence of characteristics that are poorly adapted to the environment, and the consequent professional and social imbalance. These traits exceed the fluctuations that most people have, but they are usually accepted by the person and therefore they rarely consult a psychiatrist.
Then it is said that personality has three dimensions, a subjective dimension: which is the person’s view of himself, and a social dimension: which is the view of others of the person and their evaluation of him through his behavior in society, and an ideal dimension: which is what a person wishes to possess of typical qualities, and a healthy personality is the one who can balance between These three dimensions.
Here we will talk about the most important and most common personality disorders, and we relied on the criteria mentioned later on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), and within these criteria, if a person achieves four or five of them, he is diagnosed with the disorder. So grab a pen and paper and follow me, let's get started.
paranoid personality disorder
He is the skeptical person, who if you swear to him by all the heavenly books, he will not believe you, for his whole life is based on doubt.
Distrust of others, which is manifested by the constant suspicion of the partner’s betrayal of him, and permanent doubts about their actions and motives.
He envies the best of him and despises the lesser of him.
Persecutory interpretations of all positions and comments.
He does not forget the abuse, even after years.
He is socially unpopular because he is aggressive, and he chases after the mistakes of others in order to stigmatize them.
He does not reveal his emotions because, in his opinion, others may take advantage of that badly. These behaviors alienate people from dealing with him and they stay away from him, which increases his feeling of persecution.
personality disorders
schizotypal personality disorder
You must have a melancholic friend, and as it is said, “He does not laugh at the hot loaf.”
He doesn't enjoy doing anything.
He doesn't have a good number of friends.
He prefers solo or night work as he does not like to mingle.
No sexual interests (not getting married).
He prefers things and animals more than people.
Praise, for him, has the same value as slander, meaning that it is not affected by praise and praise.
personality disorders
antisocial personality
If your friend suffers from this disorder, then God is with you. He must be bullying you on a daily basis, as he is often quick to anger and has problems. Come with me to the rest of the diagnostic characteristics:
He does not pay any attention to public and private laws, so he is often arrested for assaults on others and riots.
Characterized by deception, so he may lie or impersonate, to achieve his personal ends.
Impulsive, acting without any prior planning.
Easily provoked, turns that provocation you've made to joke into a bunch of punches to your face, and this character often gets into a lot of trouble because of the ease of being provoked.
He does not care about his own safety or the safety of those around him.
The absence of guilt and remorse when offending others.
Permanent job change and constant disagreements with the employer and colleagues.
personality disorders
borderline personality disorder
If you have recently noticed a rapid mood swing in your friend. It is possible that he is disturbed here. View our diagnostic criteria:
Mood swings and emotional instability during the day.
Self-injurious behaviors and habits, such as extravagance, sex, drug use, or excessive hope.
Repeated attempts to harm oneself, mutilate the body, and even commit suicide.
Sudden outbursts of anger and difficulty in self-control.
Zoonotic and schizophrenic symptoms may appear.
Sudden severance of personal relationships.
Multiple personal emotional relationships.
personality disorders
Histrionic personality disorder
The word “histrionic” means a failed or fake representation, and in fact most of the owners of this character are women, and if it happens to a man, something must be wrong. So look at your girlfriend and start noticing some of the features that we will mention, if she achieves 5 of them, she unfortunately has this disorder:
Constant desire to be admired and praised.
Sexual suggestions in the way she speaks, looks, and sits (these suggestions hide sexual coldness).
A tendency to exaggerate theatrical performance, whether during speech or actions.
Suggestibility: the personality is susceptible to people and circumstances.
She considers relationships to be more close and intimate than reality.
The way she talks is somewhat ambiguous.
Narcissistic personality disorder
Legend has it that there was a boy who was so impressed with himself that when he saw his reflection on the lake he fixed himself and didn't want to leave in order to keep staring at his form. And he remained for years in this state until the gods turned him into a beautiful plant on the banks of the lake called Narcissus. I did not find a more beautiful explanation about this character than this, but we will not forget the criteria, dear reader:
The owner of this character feels that everyone loves and respects him without this having any basis in reality.
He has a constant desire to impress people.
He wants his desires to be fulfilled immediately because he is more important than anything or anyone else.
His emotions are superficial towards others.
He envies people and thinks that people envy him.
He belittles those around him and criticizes their achievements and behavior, while he does not take any notice or advice and considers it a personal insult.
Behind this egotistical appearance lies a weak, fragile and prone to depression.
Always busy achieving impossible success.
Dependent personality disorder
From its name, this character prefers to rely on those around her for everything, and is also called a passive or acquiescent character. It is considered one of the oral characters (read the previous paragraph), and it has the approved criteria, which are:
He has problems making decisions, regardless of their size, as he always needs advice and reassurance.
He needs someone to be responsible for the most important aspects of his life.
Has problems contesting an idea or opinion as he is afraid that his idea will be opposed or not supported.
He has difficulty starting any project, because his self-confidence is always weak.
He prefers to have the support of others at all costs, even if he does difficult tasks.
He is preoccupied with unrealistic fears a lot.
He is afraid of loneliness and feels helpless when he is alone.
Obsessive personality disorder
He is the one who is whispered by any small obsession, in fact it is an anal character with distinction, unlike the previous oral character, characterized by:
Perfectionist and meticulous, preoccupied with detail, scheduling, and punctuality.
The desire to do everything to the fullest without any decrease, the character is distinguished by great dedication to work, even at the expense of entertainment and friends.
The character has a clear conscience, as she does not underestimate moral and human matters.
Do not prefer to dispose of anything that exists, even if it is of no material or moral value.
This person does not want to work with anyone or even to delegate the business, if the second party does not agree to all the terms.
Stubborn and rigid in her opinions.
She has material and moral miserliness, as she always calculates the future and is keen not to spend money except on necessary matters.
personality disorders
One of the personality disorders present: Now what do I do?
Medications rarely help in personality disorders, and the main treatment is psychological, and this is of course if the patient agrees, because most of them are adapting to his personality and do not consider it disturbed. Types of psychotherapy include:
Analytical psychotherapy.
Dialectical behaviour therapy.
Cognitive behavioural therapy.
Group therapy.
Psycho-education (the education of the person and those around him about this disorder and how to deal with it).
