Hypnosis
For more than 200 years people have been arguing about hypnosis and how it occurs, as we see what a person does under the influence of such states, but it is not clear why he does so, let's learn more about this state in the lines below.
It is a trance-like state in which a person increases focus, feels calm and relaxed, and is more open to surrounding suggestions, with the help of a therapist who uses verbal repetition or mental imagery, and this technique is also used to help control an individual's unwanted behaviour, or to relieve anxiety or pain.
Hypnotherapy
A hypnosis session takes about an hour, in which the trainer uses different techniques of relaxation to reach the hypnotic state where the person is conscious, but the body becomes more relaxed and calm and the mind becomes more responsive to suggestions, as these suggestions depend on the behaviour or condition that the person is trying to treat, For example, the individual gets rid of unwanted behaviour or an unhealthy habit, or modifying negative ways of thinking that exacerbate symptoms of depression, or to get rid of pain and anxiety.
Hypnotherapists
There are many professional organisations and licensing agencies for hypnotherapy therapists, where therapists must attend at least 40 hours of workshop training, 20 hours of individual training, and have completed at least two years of clinical practice in hypnotherapy. Some medical professionals have incorporated hypnosis into their practice, and they are:
- Dentists.
- Marriage specialists.
- nurses;
- the doctors.
- Social workers.
Types of hypnosis
There are four main types of hypnosis :
- Traditional hypnosis: It is one of the simplest and most widely used types as it relies on simple and direct commands. Where audio files and hypnosis tapes are used to influence the patient's behaviour, thoughts and feelings.
- Ericksonian hypnosis: This type relies on metaphors rather than direct suggestions, allowing the brain to think creatively and draw conclusions.
- NLP Hypnosis: This type is used in addition to self-hypnosis to address self-confidence and self-esteem, and uses NLP to get rid of fears and phobias, and is one of the most effective methods.
- Self-hypnosis: The patient hypnotises himself to achieve a state of relaxation by applying one of the above types and then makes suggestions to himself using MP3 files or a CD. 3
Health problems that help hypnosis
- Insomnia and difficulty sleeping:
Hypnosis provides relaxation that helps sleep, as a person enters a trance-like state, it becomes easy for a person to fall asleep during hypnosis, and also helps solve the problem of sleepwalkers by training them to wake up when their feet touch the ground.
- Anxiety and phobia:
Hypnosis relieves anxiety, especially anxiety caused by a health condition such as cancer, and not anxiety in general, and also helps phobia patients who suffer from an intense fear of a specific thing such as heights, insects, or others, as it encourages the body to use its natural response to relax, and slows down Breathing, low blood pressure, feeling relaxed.
- Stress and depression:
Helps people suffering from stress and depression; It works to bring stressed people into a state of deep relaxation and also helps some patients to change their lifestyle to a healthy lifestyle, which can reduce their daily stress.
For people with depression, hypnosis reprograms their subconscious to better manage the causes of their depression, ridding them of negative thinking and pent-up negative memories, and improving their ability to cope and connect with only positive memories. 4
Disadvantages of hypnosis
Although many people have found great success in hypnotherapy, there are some drawbacks to hypnosis:
- Its high cost as it is not covered by insurance plans.
- Not effective for people who suffer from other mental disorders such as hallucinations and delusions.
- It may cause headache and dizziness for some people after the session, but it is short-lived.
- Many may not respond to hypnosis; Because some people cannot be put into a trance-like state, and they don't accept the idea of hypnosis.
- Difficulty finding a good hypnosis therapist as this practice is not licensed.
