Lost in the Noise

Why silence might be the answer we've been avoiding

By Leesh lalaPublished 8 months ago 3 min read

There’s a strange thing happening to all of us — we’re always surrounded, yet often feel alone. Always connected, yet constantly distracted. In a world louder than ever, silence has become something rare, even frightening. And maybe that’s why we run from it.

Have you ever sat in a room, no music, no notifications, no background chatter — just yourself and your thoughts? Most people don’t. Most people can’t. We drown in the noise because the quiet speaks truths we’ve buried deep.

The world teaches us to stay busy. Scroll, click, watch, swipe — repeat. Fill the empty spaces with entertainment, updates, validation. But all this noise becomes a wall, a barrier between us and our own selves. And that’s the hidden cost: we lose the sound of our inner voice.

We say we’re overwhelmed. We say we’re anxious. We say we feel disconnected. But maybe the answer isn’t to do more, but to stop. To step away from the constant buzz of input, and just listen. Not to others — but to ourselves.

There is a power in silence. It’s where we remember who we are without the filters, the likes, the expectations. It’s where we begin to notice the little things — our heartbeat, the way our thoughts unfold, the ache we never acknowledged, the dream we tucked away in fear. Silence is a mirror, and sometimes what it reflects is uncomfortable. But it’s also honest. And real.

We often associate silence with loneliness, but that’s not always true. Loneliness is feeling unwanted. Silence is just being. One is hollow. The other can be whole. And perhaps in that quiet space, we can start to heal.

We’re always chasing answers. What should I do? Who should I be? What’s next? But silence doesn’t shout answers — it reveals them gently. It nudges, not demands. It doesn’t force clarity, but it creates the space where clarity can emerge.

Think of the most important moments in your life — the real ones. They weren’t loud. They were quiet. A goodbye whispered at a hospital bed. A look held longer than words. A decision made in the stillness of a sleepless night.

Silence doesn’t need approval. It doesn’t seek applause. And that’s why it’s so terrifying — it requires us to be real. Not perform, not pretend. Just be.

What if we started to make space for it? Even five minutes a day. No distractions. No agenda. Just us and the quiet. What would we discover? What might rise to the surface if we let it?

We underestimate the value of simply existing without input. We underestimate ourselves. Because when we finally stop listening to everything outside, we begin hearing the voice inside — the one that’s been waiting.

The world will always be noisy. That won’t change. But how we respond to it can. We don’t need to escape forever. We just need to remember what it feels like to pause. To breathe. To be.

In the silence, you might find sadness. But you might also find peace. You might uncover wounds. But also healing. You might meet yourself again — not the version others expect, but the one you left behind when life got too loud.

And maybe, just maybe, that quiet version of you holds the answers you’ve been searching for all along.

In a world that never stops talking, silence becomes sacred. It’s not emptiness — it’s space to breathe, feel, and remember who we are. Don’t be afraid of the quiet. In it, you’ll find truths that noise hides. Sometimes, the loudest answers come when we finally choose to listen.

I can't remember the last time I just sat in silence. I need to try it sometime!
