In a relationship, signs of abuse start to show

When love should be growing, it begins to wane and ebb

Behavior controlling, nicknames changing dirty names

Victims gaslighted or simmering in shame

You're isolated and mistrustful of those around

Criticism cloaked as 'helpful advice' you hear the sound

As secrets fill your life it's hard to move forward

And sadness turn your joy to a heavy grey cloud

Know that these signs need not stay part of our day

If you feel controlled it's time to take your voice and fly away.

One day you felt content, soul and heart in tune

The world was yours to take, and you were in the mood

But suddenly something changed, and you can't quite explain

A darkness has descended, no more joy remains

Your partner seems to know, but never says a word

The atmosphere is heavy, your heart is filled with dread

The days of being happy, now seem so far away

And you can't imagine life, when it will be okay

It's hard to tell what's happening, your heart can't quite explain

The subtle signs of emotional abuse are so hard to contain

At first you felt confused, what was happening to you

But now you can see it, and it's so hard to make it through

There are the words of criticism, and the silent treatment too

The little digs and jabs, that keep coming out of you

The blaming and the shaming, the guilt and the fear

It's hard to feel any joy, no matter how hard you try

The honest truth is hard to face, it's hard to let it in

The pain you feel is real, no matter how hard you try to pretend

Your partner doesn't believe in you, and you can't meet their demands

No matter what you do, it's never enough to make them proud

The constant threat of punishment, and the fear it brings

The moments of guilt and shame, that you can't do anything

You start to question yourself, and your very worth

And you're scared to stand up for yourself, you don't have the power

It's hard to see the truth, that this is emotional abuse

But the truth is, it's real, and it's hard to make it through

The only way to heal is to recognize the signs

And to take the steps to get to a safe and healthy place

It's hard to leave and start anew, but you must have the strength

To find the courage to be yourself and finally break the chains

It's time to trust yourself and develop your own voice

You can start to heal, and find freedom and joy

It's hard to overcome, but you must find the courage

And to recognize the signs of emotional abuse

The courage can be found in your heart and soul

And it's the only way to make it through and be whole

Are you experiencing emotional abuse?

Your heart and mind are in a state of confusion

The subtle signs of manipulation and confusion

Making it hard to even get through the day

Early signs of a toxic relationship

Are you being taken for granted and not given respect

Are you feeling unappreciated and always getting dismissed

Do you feel like your feelings are not being heard

The signs of emotional abuse are all around

It's not always easy to tell when it's happening

The emotional abuser has the upper hand

And can make you feel like you're nothing

Are you being controlled and always monitored
