Phoebe Bridgers Talks' Heartbreak 'amid Rumors of split from Paul Mezcal

Amid rumors that she and Irish actor Paul Mezcal have called off their engagement, Phoebe Bridgers offers some tips on how to overcome her "heartbreak."

In April, rumors swirled that the "Motion Sickness" singer and the "Ordinary People" star were engaged.

Then, in Mezcal's most recent interview with the Guardian in November, the publication claimed that the two were "reportedly engaged." That claim was later retracted by The New York Times.

Now, in Amelia Dimoldenberg's Chicken Shop Dating YouTube series, Bridgers gently touches on the subject of "heartbreak" when asked if she has "any tips for getting over it."

The Grammy-nominated singer responded matter-of-factly: "You have to. You have to, at some point it will end, but you can't let it end. That's my specialty."

Dimoldenberg then asked, "What has heartbreak taught you?"

"I think if I knew that, I wouldn't be making music now," admits Bridgers, laughing.

Mezcal and Bridgers started dating in 2020 after connecting on social media, but it wasn't until December 2021 that they officially started dating on Instagram.

Following reports of their engagement, which have now shifted to rumours of their split, Bridgers has reportedly been spotted with Beau Burnham on comedian Kate Berlant's stand-up show, further fuelling the split speculation.

According to Jezebel, one of their staff members, who also attended a New York comedy show directed by Burnham on 19 December, described the interaction between Burnham and Bridgers as "flirtatious".

Neither Bridgers nor Mezcal has publicly addressed rumors of their engagement or breakup.

Separately, Kildare born Mr Mezcal revealed he had bought his first home.

The actor, who shot to fame for his role in Ordinary People, admitted he was a bit annoyed to be saddled with a mortgage for the first time.

"When [ordinary people] came out, I wanted to leave [Ireland] positively," he told the Financial Times.

"Over the last two or three years, I've had a longer term idea of where I should spend my time between jobs."

Buying a home in Ireland, he says, is his priority because he wants to settle here.

"It's a beautiful part of the world. It was peaceful. The people here are kind."

He did not reveal the exact location of the new house, but admitted it was a bit overwhelming for him.

"I hope five years from now I don't hate it... I'm scared."

"That's all those burgeoning adult things, like mortgages. A little bit of pressure. But it's exciting. There's always a time for growth."

Mezcal is currently starring in A Streetcar Named Desire in London's West End.

"It was one of the first plays I seriously studied," he added. "I kind of fell in love with Tennessee Williams.

"A Streetcar would be my favourite of his plays: it fits perfectly into the brutal sex scenes he was so good at, but there is some beauty in them... Characters can express the beauty of the world."

"Last year, I was living in Ireland with my boyfriend's family.

"It's like a complete rom," says the award-winning singer.

Fans have long reveled in the celebrity couple, who met on Twitter while Paul was starring in Ordinary People.

It's clear they both love Ireland, as it was reported last year that they were considering buying a home in West Cork.

When Vogue asked her for advice on "successful relationships," she said, a clear sign was that "the thing you love to do most is hang out with each other."

She also shared their "typical date night" : "Laying in the park for a few hours, then going home and watching TV."

Paul has been on tour in the US with Phoebe and admits he enjoys spending time with his fiancee, who is rumored to be fiancee.

"I really, really enjoy spending time with her and her band and her friends," he tells Bustle.

"It's also great to see a country I'm not familiar with.

"I really love the Pacific Northwest. I love that place, like Portland. New York. I think I'm a relatively warm person, so it's all very enjoyable."

Paul and Phoebe were first linked in the summer of 2020 when they were spotted having brunch together at a cafe in Kinsale, Cork.

When they were rumored to be together, Paul appeared in Phoebe's music video for the song "Savior Complex", which was directed by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

A few days later, Paul finally revealed he had a girlfriend in an interview with GQ, calling his girlfriend a "lifesaver."

After hitting the red carpet together in November 2021, the two officially confirmed their relationship in a sweet Instagram post in December.
