Child Abuse Spiking in 🇨🇦

Covid19

By Brenda Lee Lord-HingerPublished 5 years ago • 3 min read

Child abuse and mistreatment is on the increase in Canada. Doctors say it may be the result of Covid-19 restrictions being tightened.

Morgann Campbell believes the alarming trend could lead to another health crises.

Relationships are strained-stress and frustrations for parents are over the top. Outlets unavailable. Children’s ’safety nets’ are non-existent!

According to a new study by researchers from John Hopkins, published in the Lancet medical journal: “Hunger caused by Covid-19 shutdowns and restrictions is leading to the deaths of 10,000 children a month worldwide, and causing severe malnutrition-“Wasting”-and stunting in another 550,000 children.

Do to these stunning well researched reports, the leaders of four major international agencies including, UNICEF and WHO-are calling for restrictions to be eased.

It has been acknowledged that by closing schools, by having health care services disrupted, and by having nutritional programs dysfunctional-there has definitely been more harm caused.

Many people believe that politics plays a huge role in this pandemic. A couple of concerned citizens posted by media:

“Not surprised! This is sad. The weak governments and out of touch politicians have zero idea of what they are doing. It’s about saving lives from COVID-19. Everyone else is expendable. More government assistance-more-more-more power”!

“10k deaths a month is an insignificant number when you’re trying to influence an election”!

Yes, there are many upset people. Many stressed, frustrated, and hurting. Which causes meltdown’s on many levels. Affecting adults and children alike.

A clinical Psychologist and Psychology Professor ( Simon Sherry ) has many concerns. In fact he distributed a media release outlining his concerns about the cure to COVID-19 being worse than the virus if the government doesn’t move more quickly in opening the province ( speaking of Nova Scotia).

Is this true for all the provinces in Canada? Does there need to be more acknowledgement of the many harms and deaths-likely from prolonged isolation from work, from school, families, and recreational activities.

Could many of the suicides that seem to be happening on a regular basis be factors, like unemployment and underemployment.

If adults are being severely tried by the pandemic, of course our children are not exempt from the stresses.

There is talk in the media of a new Mental Health facility possibly on its way of being built. That was never in the plan before COVID-19 hit.

Stressed relationships. I have personally witnessed much havoc in marriages since the pandemic began. It has taken its toll on many. Domestic disputes-divorces increased. Young children calling 911 for help.

Friendships have been pushed to the limits. Friends sizing up one another as potential lethal threats. Avoiding long time friends who have been working on the front lines. Getting fed up with relatives constantly checking in-making sure you are following the distancing rule, the hand washing rule-sanitizing rule, and the mask rule. You got to the point that you don’t answer the phone to them anymore.

We all want good news, we all want change. But what is the reality for the next few months?

“Quebec’s future over the next few months raises more questions”. ( the link news paper)

“Expect very little change in restrictions over the next two months”. ( dailyhive.com)

“Experts warn on what to expect from Coronavirus” ( bc. CTV news)

“Covid: when will it be over and we can do this again” ( BBC news )

“What you need to know about BC’s new travel restrictions” ( CBC)

My personal thoughts for all:

Though some of us need to be apart- we are all in this together. Stay calm, remain focused on what life looks like after Covid-19. When family and friends will be reunited. When parents are back to regular routine with work, and children back to school. When we can plan for summer vacations and Christmas parties. When life it normal!
