An untamed mind

Youth v Older self. Belle's back to youth challenge.

By Antoni De'LeonPublished 9 months ago β€’ 3 min read

Two minds, like ships passing in the night, collide in the vastness of the space within which dreamers dream...

One is older, hair slightly graying...mature, wise and beautiful...The other is young, youthful**filled with the confidence of a life yet unlived...

Youth speaks as youth is wont to idealize:

"My mind can be as vast and untamed as the ocean, my thoughts soothing, like gentle waves lapping on the shore".

The wise and beautiful one speaks, knowing the parallels of a life lived:

"My thoughts may roar and rage, engulfing me in tempestuous storms that threaten to pull me into their depths".

Youth is curious of the wise soul who echoes the other side of midnight of her thoughts...she somehow seems so familiar, yet so surreal**who are you...why are you me, yet not me. her thoughts falter as she continues speaking...

"I often marvel at this duality within me...how my mind holds the power to create both exquisite beauty and devastating chaos". Muses youth.

The wise half of her duality replies:

"There are times when I sit under the evening sky as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of gold and crimson, or by the riverbank, clutching an ancient journal my grandmother had given me. It was no ordinary journal, but was rumored to hold the secrets to mastering the mind's infinite power. Etched on the first page were words that resonate deeply with the love of nature's building blocks".

"Your thoughts are the architects of your fate. Build wisely".

"Find the journal by your bed when you awaken, younger me, within the pages I have written sage advice to guide you as you mature into a graceful, intelligent and successful better version of me".

And so youth is left to awaken and ponder meeting herself...and the two paths stretching beyond horizons. One, adorned with golden gates that opens to a realm of tranquility...a paradise where dreams flourish and love envelops like a warm embrace.

The other path is shrouded in darkness, its fiery glow promising destruction. The shadows delight in doubts, fears, and regrets, beckoning her to step closer. She stands at the crossroads, torn between the allure of light and the magnetic pull of dark, yet gothic despair.

A shadowy figure looms...a reflection of herself, older, radiant and serene. She is me, youth cerebrates, cogitates, deeply affected by it all...yet...

The specter speaks with a voice much like her own, a voice as soothing as rain on parched earth:

"Blessed one, your mind holds the power to shape your destiny. Each thought you nurture is a stone in the path you choose. Guard your thoughts, for they will lead you to joy or sorrow".

As the shadow dissolves, youth awakens with newfound clarity, realizing that every moment offered a choice...to choose one road over another, to foster hope or surrender to despair. Unrelenting determination is born from mindfulness. She opens her journal and begins to read, each word planting seeds of positivity, direction and clarity...a roadmap to the great landscaped canvas which would be her life.

She speaks her gratitude to the wind, to the older half of herself, promising to adhere as close as possible to her wisdom and guided ministrations...

Yet, as youth is and youth will ever be, she forgot her promise for many years, betwixt the quest for the zest for life and a panting thirst for discovery of the unknown.

The journal rested quietly beneath the trappings of myriads of storm tossed affectations.

Youth (now blossomed into that space between young and not so young) was edging just past thirty when she remembered it...her heart had been badly broken.

After the tears, self pity, rage and anger, the tossing out of relics of youth and wrong choices**chance...or perfect timing, uncovered the journal.

She dried her tears...opened the dream door of her memory...And began to read.

Everything changed that tear stained morning. Thanks to her other self.

Her new life had begun!

This is such an interesting take on the challenge... I love that you decided to go into more of a metaphysical interpretation rather than the more literal idea. The duality of the self and the ways in which we meet at points... how our cobblestones collide every once in a while. A fun entry, to say the least! Thank you so much for entering! The results will be posted soon.

This was Majestic, Beautiful & filled with Wisdom Antoni! I love the line: "Your thoughts are the architects of your fate. Build wisely." I need to start calling you the Yoda, pardon me the Yodess of Vocal! Go gurl! πŸ’ͺ🏾🌸

  • I love that this was not so much about specific choices or advice but about choosing wisdom itself. Reminds me of Koheleth in Ecclesiastes or the writer of Proverbs (traditionally Solomon). Well done, Antoni!

  • Oh wow, this was so deep and powerful! Loved your take on this challenge!

What a great story, and what if we could really do meet ourselves in this way. Could our younger selves learn from the older version of our self? Just think. Good job.

  • So very beautifully written!
