The Bloody History of Chillingham Castle

and Its Ghostly Residents

By stevie h ballPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Tucked away in the picturesque Northumberland countryside, Chillingham Castle is widely regarded as one of the most haunted places in England. With a gruesome history of bloodshed, war, and heartbreak, it's no surprise that this medieval fortress has earned a reputation for eerie encounters. Many believe that some of the unfortunate souls who met their end within its stone walls never truly departed.

A Bloody Beginning

The story of Chillingham Castle dates back to the 12th century when it was built to defend England from Scottish invaders. Due to its strategic location, it was frequently at the heart of the Anglo-Scottish conflicts, with both sides leaving their violent mark on the castle grounds over the centuries.

One of the most terrifying figures associated with Chillingham is John Sage, a notorious torturer who served under King Edward I. Known as the "Torturer of Chillingham," Sage took sadistic pleasure in tormenting his prisoners. During the 13th century, the castle’s dungeons became infamous as holding cells for captured Scots. Sage employed grotesque methods of torture, from stretching victims on racks to crushing bones—his cruelty knew no limits. The instruments of this dark past remain on display in the dungeon, etched with history.

Sage’s demise was fittingly brutal. After killing a young girl in a rage, villagers stormed the castle, dragged him out, and hanged him. Legend has it that his tormented spirit still roams the castle, particularly around the torture chambers.

Ghosts of the Castle

Chillingham Castle's chilling reputation goes beyond its bloody history—many visitors report encounters with its ghostly inhabitants.

The Blue Boy: Perhaps the most well-known ghost is the "Blue Boy." For years, people claimed to hear his sorrowful cries, especially near the Pink Room, where sudden drops in temperature would accompany the sight of a boy in blue. In the early 20th century, during renovations, a child’s skeleton, wrapped in remnants of blue fabric, was discovered within the castle walls. Though his body has since been laid to rest, some still claim to feel his presence.

Lady Mary Berkeley: Another tragic figure is Lady Mary Berkeley, once married to Lord Grey of Wark and Chillingham. Her heart was broken when her husband left her for her younger sister, and she spent her remaining days in the castle, awaiting his return. Today, some visitors say they’ve seen her ghost wandering the halls, while others report hearing the soft rustle of her dress late at night.

The White Pantry Ghost: In the castle’s pantry, a different kind of spirit is said to appear—a woman in white. One night, a servant encountered her when she asked for water, but when he turned to fetch it, she disappeared. It’s believed she was poisoned and now remains trapped, forever seeking help that never comes.

Paranormal Experiences

Aside from sightings of ghostly figures, Chillingham Castle is the site of numerous other paranormal phenomena. Visitors often feel cold spots, hear unexplained noises, or sense unseen hands brushing against them. Some claim to hear disembodied voices calling their names, while others describe a deep sense of unease, particularly around the torture chambers and the old chapel.

Paranormal investigators regularly visit Chillingham and often capture strange orbs, shadows, and mysterious sounds. For the brave, the castle even offers ghost tours, inviting guests to explore its haunted history up close.

A Castle Frozen in Time

Today, Chillingham Castle is more than a historical site; it’s a museum of its bloody past. Walking through its rooms, it’s easy to imagine the horrors that took place within its walls. From the violent reign of the torturer John Sage to the heartache of Lady Mary Berkeley, the castle's history is still very much alive. And for those who believe in the supernatural, it’s not just history that remains—it's the restless spirits of those who suffered here.

Whether you’re drawn by its grim past or its ghostly legends, Chillingham Castle is a place where the line between past and present blurs. Echoes of its haunting history are never far from those who visit.

If you ever find yourself in Northumberland, take the chance to explore Chillingham Castle—just be ready. You might leave with more than just memories.
