This Guy Loves Opening Day

Why I really love this unofficial baseball holiday and so should you

The 2025 MLB season is finally underway! Yes! I love this time of year and gets me so hyped up. If you're a die-hard fan of whatever team you root for, you know how much of a big deal this day is. You must be thinking, "What the hell is he talking about?" Opening Day is like the first day of school for us baseball fans. It usually means that the regular season has begun, which starts on the last Thursday in March. Many fans would take a day off from school or work to watch their favorite team play, either in person or on TV. If you're going to play hooky to watch your favorite team, I won't blame you. How can you not be romantic about baseball? If this is your first time taking part in this exciting tradition, I have some tips on what to wear, which I'll discuss in a bit. But first, here's a bit of history about the first Opening Day.

A team photo of the Boston Red Caps

The first Opening Day game took place on April 22, 1876, where the Boston Red Caps (now known today as the Atlanta Braves) defeating the Philadelphia Athletics (now known today as simply the Athletics, due to the team currently playing in West Sacramento, California for the 2025-2027 season before officially relocating to Las Vegas for the 2028 season) 6-5. This was also the very first National League baseball game that was played. Only 3,000 people were in attendance that day. One rule that was instituted was that all teams had to be located in cities that had a population of 75,000 or more.

Now for the good part...

What to wear on Opening Day?

Me on Opening Day 2024

There are two or three things I wear on Opening Day. For example, last year, I wore a Texas Rangers World Series Max Scherzer jersey, a World Series t-shirt, and a Rangers ball cap. You can wear one item, two things, or all three. It's totally up to you. You most likely have at least one of these things in your closet. Baseball is a 162-game season, so you can wear these on game days, not just on Opening Day.

These two images (seen above) are the gold-inspired 2025 Los Angeles Dodgers Freddie Freeman World Series jersey, via MLB Shop. A baseball jersey usually costs about $200. If you don't want to spend that amount of money on a jersey, the first place you could look is on eBay, which there are jerseys that have been worn by someone else, but in good or decent condition. I've been purchasing previously-worn clothing, including jerseys, for years and it was less expensive. The second option is sites where they sell MLB jerseys for up to $100. However, always do your research, look at the websites carefully to make sure it's a legitimate company, and look at the jersey or jerseys you are seeking to buy. If a jersey seems look unusual, don't buy it.

Ball Cap

My Cooperstown Rangers cap.

You can purchase a ball cap on either from the MLB Shop or Lids.

Flat-billed caps (which you can see above) costs up to $50. I have at least five of these, so they're not cheap at all. Don't let this scare or discourage you from buying one.

Any Shirt of Your Favorite Team

My shirts from 2024.

Shirts on MLB Shop costs between $35-$50. Yeah, I know it's ridiculous. However, fans will end up buying them anyway. There's a thing called supply and demand. You can find a less expensive shirt on eBay. You wallet will thank you.

So why do I love Opening Day so much? It's because of the excitement of finally seeing your team play to kick off the regular season. The Rangers will win the AL West and win the World Series. Sure, they didn't repeat as Champions last year, but I have faith that they will win it all. Besides, repeating as World Series Champions is tough. No team has done it since the Yankees in 2000 when they completed their last three-peat. It may be a bold prediction, but I'll tell you one thing: the Dodgers will NOT repeat as champions again. Their years-long reign as NL West Champions will come to an end. We need different teams in the World Series each year, because I don't like a spoiled, entitled team like the Dodgers.

I hope your favorite team has a fantastic season and hopefully make it to the playoffs. Maybe your favorite team might make it to the World Series and possibly win it all.
