The Power of a Kind Word

How One Kind Word Changed My Life Forever

By Manoj JayaramPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

I remember it like it was yesterday, even though it happened over a decade ago. I was sitting in the back of the classroom, staring at the clock, waiting for the bell to ring so I could escape the monotony of high school. I was feeling particularly down that day, for reasons I can no longer recall.

As I was lost in my thoughts, my English teacher approached me and placed a hand on my shoulder. "You have a real talent for writing," she said with a smile. "Keep it up."

It was such a simple, kind gesture, but it had a profound impact on me. At a time when I felt invisible and unimportant, her words made me feel seen and valued. It was the first time anyone had ever acknowledged my writing, and it gave me the confidence to pursue it further.

I started writing more frequently after that day, sharing my work with friends and family. I even submitted a few pieces to local publications and received positive feedback. The more I wrote, the more I realized how much I loved it. I began to see writing as a form of therapy, a way to process my emotions and make sense of the world around me.

Eventually, my passion for writing led me to pursue a degree in journalism. I landed a job as a reporter for a local newspaper and worked my way up to editor. I've written countless stories over the years, covering everything from politics to human interest pieces. I've even won a few awards for my writing.

Looking back, I realize how much that small moment with my English teacher changed the course of my life. Without her encouragement, I may have never pursued writing seriously. Her words gave me the confidence to believe in myself and my abilities.

I often think about how many other people's lives could be changed by a simple act of kindness. That's why I make a conscious effort to pay it forward whenever I can. Whether it's a compliment to a stranger or an encouraging word to a friend, I know firsthand the power that small gestures can have.

As I reflect on that moment in the classroom, I realize that it wasn't just about writing. It was about feeling seen and heard. It was about someone taking the time to acknowledge my potential and encourage me to pursue my dreams.

In a world where negativity and criticism seem to be the norm, it's easy to forget the impact that kindness can have. But as I've learned, even the smallest acts of kindness can make a significant difference in someone's life.

I've since reached out to my old English teacher to thank her for the impact she had on me. I've let her know that her kind words changed the course of my life, and I'm forever grateful for them. She was surprised to hear how much of an impact she had on me, and I could tell that it meant a lot to her.

I now make a point to thank people when they inspire me or make a difference in my life. I believe that gratitude and kindness go hand in hand, and that expressing appreciation is just as important as the act of kindness itself.

In conclusion, the power of a kind word should never be underestimated. It has the power to change lives and inspire greatness. I encourage everyone to take a moment to acknowledge the people in their lives who have made a difference, and to spread kindness wherever they go. You never know whose life you might change with a simple, kind gesture.
