Dancing in the Summer Rain

Washing the World Away

Today was a hot day

Very hot

Oppressively humid

Hazy skies mute the blue

The kind of summer heat that makes your sun-drenched skin

Sticky with sweat

The rain began at sundown

While we were sitting out on the porch

Pinging the metal roof

Like a thousand beads falling to the floor

the radio muffled by the rain

I took my shirt off

And stepped off the porch into the rain

By HUUM on Unsplash

Cold raindrops hit my skin

Setting off a million goosebumps

I looked back at him on the porch

And beckoned him with my hand to join me in the rain

He looked at me with hesitation but relented

He took off his shirt

And joined me in the rain

We held each other, laughing at the silliness

Remembering with nostalgia

Times as children, we would dance in the rain

We started swaying to the music

Rain dripping off the tip of his nose

Drops of water dripping off my brow

He held my head and drew our foreheads together

Our skin now wet

Not sticky

I laid my head on his chest

As we continued our sway to the music

It started to rain heavily

But neither one of us was ready to go back

The rain washing away the sweat

The water drowning our anxieties

Making us clean

From the battle of the day.

Grabbing hold of the moment of happiness

We remained

Dancing in the summer rain.

    Congratulations on your top story!

  • There’s something timeless and healing about this piece. You captured that beautiful, wordless connection between two people so effortlessly—where rain isn’t just water, but release. I felt every drop.

Love the line - hazy skies mute the blue.

  • This is so lovely 🥹 I had to read it again… Because the first time all I could hear was Belinda Carlisle singing in my head from the title 😆🫶🏻
