Bystander
words unsaid to my niece: a prompted poem

It’s not your fault I’m not there
You didn’t do anything wrong
I’m sorry you’ll never meet me
Only the performing mask
My dear niece, I wish I could say
Your aunt, not your uncle loves you
No one speaks of me anymore
Innocent niece, made bystander
From things unsaid

This piece was written for a prompt from the QVV Facebook group, "Craft a poem with 50 words about unsaid things. Things you've wanted to say but haven't, good or bad." So I wrote a poem to my niece who is not allowed to know me as Aunt or as Savannah, and this poem speaks to the things unsaid to her about why I'm not around in her life anymore.

I remember this crushing one <3
It's so crushing to lose a part of your family for living your life the way you must to be "you". I really hope you remain in solidarity with your true identity and never hold back to make someone else comfortable. Big hug
profoundly moving, capturing the pain of unspoken truths and hidden identity. heartfelt words
So painful, this life sometimes..thank u for sharing the pain so beautifully expressed💜

Oh Savannah - I'm sorry these words are going unsaid. I am sure you would be a most excellent aunt and I hope at some point you get the chance to be.
This is heartbreaking, but beautifully written. Congrats on the TS.
Heartbreaking, Savannah 💔 I feel the weight of emotion in this xx
👏👏👏
I love this poem and I am so sorry for you and your niece...it's wrong to deprive a child of all the love they could get (except in cases of abuse or neglect)
So very sad and heartbreaking.
Beautiful but heart breaking.
Awe, you’ should send this to your niece! Great work! Beautiful poem!
